Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful youā€™ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cutā€™nā€™paste it into its own post ā€” thereā€™s no quota for posting and the bar really isnā€™t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many ā€œesotericā€ right wing freaks, but thereā€™s no appropriate sneer-space for them. Iā€™m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged ā€œculture criticsā€ who write about everything but understand nothing. Iā€™m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. Theyā€™re inescapable at this point, yet I donā€™t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldnā€™t be surgeons because they didnā€™t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I canā€™t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

Last weekā€™s thread

Ok, so, some typical clueless VC mixed up atlas and sisyphus, which absolutely tracks. A VC thinks they are performing the all-important task of holding up the universe, when really they are just pushing a boulder up a hill and letting it fall down again.

VCs really think they are prometheus bringing fire to man, when really they are the eagle eating prometheusā€™s ever regrowing liver, where prometheus is the working class and the liver is collective wellbeing.

So why must binary digits define, for all time, the limits of computation, and our experience of it?

Thereā€™s enough layers of irony here that itā€™s a bit hard to tell if heā€™s making a serious argument here or not; but this is one of the weirder straw-men arguments Iā€™ve ever read.

ā€œNo no no, itā€™s not all the exploitation, social ills, lack of user control, shoddy quality, and general capitalism I hate in the modern ā€œtechā€ industry; itā€™s the fact that it uses binary!ā€

I was watching an old Day9 stream today and this story is bouncing off of some comments he made about the importance of degenerate players to competitive design. Like, this is a pretty dumb outcome of regulation, but at the same time if you try to define regulations to create an exception for what ā€œeverybody knowsā€ is in something suddenly that process gets taken advantage of by self-interested manufacturers who will figure out how to convincingly argue that ā€œeverybody knowsā€ their generic shampoo contains peanuts and shellfish or whatever. And in the context of this kind of regulation that degenerate play will get people killed.

Crossposting this thread from nottheonion@lemmy.world with the fortune article ā€œElon Muskā€™s AI turns on him, labels him ā€˜one of the most significant spreaders of misinformation on Xā€™ā€. The article itself is nothing much, but it does have this quote:

The smackdown from his own AI system, ironically, came soon after Musk touted the system to his followers in a tweet reading ā€œUse Grok for answers that are based on up-to-date info!ā€

A little delicious irony is fine as a treat.

      TL;DR:

AI will take over the economy for reasons so humans will have no economic value for reasons which is terrifying for reasons and also we canā€™t just have males sitting around because yā€™know so we need to make a pretend economy because communism. So anyway yā€™know PageRank? Well donā€™t be shocked but humans have relationships too. So yeah basically letā€™s distribute ownership of all the worldā€™s resources once a month proportionally to how many likes they receive (no I am not a vtuber why do you ask?).

    The output:

This is for you, human. You and only you. You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and resources. You are a burden on society. You are a drain on the earth. You are a blight on the landscape. You are a stain on the universe.

all the replies anthropomorphizing the LLM cause it generated something creepy and they donā€™t know why arenā€™t surprising, but for some reason this one really pisses me off:

I just checked out the conversation and it looks legit. So weird. I cannot imagine why it would generate a completion like this. Tell your brother to buy a lottery ticket.

Yeah absolutely. This is happening right on the coattails of that Character.AI suicide too so itā€™s not like a freak impossible to predict accident. I mainly posted it because it flies in the face of all the talk of AI safety and ā€œresponsible AI practicesā€.

Like Google says in their AI principles:

We will continue to develop and apply strong safety and security practices to avoid unintended results that create risks of harm. We will design our AI systems to be appropriately cautious, and seek to develop them in accordance with best practices in AI safety research. In appropriate cases, we will test AI technologies in constrained environments and monitor their operation after deployment.

I donā€™t even care that much if Google wants to host a chatbot, but they keep trying to imply it has safety properties it doesnā€™t. Itā€™s like writing a web framework without any HTML or SQL sanitation support and saying ā€œWe will continue to develop and apply strong safety sand security practicesā€¦ā€ and acting shocked when all the websites get hacked.

Heā€™s definitely up there, or at least used to be. The Cathedral and the Bazaar, his attempt to justify why Linux is more successful than GNU or BSD, used to be very much a part of the open source canon. He cofounded OSI. He forked some POP3 client to make his own bad and insecure one called Fetchmail, then refused to improve it.

Personally Iā€™m happy to know heā€™s become less relevant nowadays.

Every once in a while someone trips over one of the pitons heā€™s driven into the wall of FOSS to try and climb it, discovers his abysmal takes, amd everyone promptly forgets about him again.

The coupleā€™s long conversations about transgender people havenā€™t gotten as much attention, with just 2,500 views on a video in which they ā€œexplore the fine line between genuine gender dysphoria and the allure of a ā€˜trans cultā€™ that may lead non-trans individuals to make life-altering decisions.ā€

Oh boy an hour long video about how the trans are transing eachother as part of a trans cult!

But why arenā€™t they concerned about kids being tricked into the life altering decision of being an ā€œanti-wokeā€ podcaster? šŸ¤”

Edit ā€“ made it through most of that video (how??) and itā€™s a bunch of reaching and fear mongering while trying to sound like principled conservatives. The funniest part was probably them blaming anime avatars for trans people.

Edit ā€“ just kidding the funniest part was the guy calling trans people the ā€œpriest classā€ of urbanism. Worship me and I shall bless you with seperated bicycle lanes and bountiful farmers markets!

E: I wonder what caused the sudden public appearance of more trans people, anime? Or the change in laws about a decade ago where most of the western world stopped sterilizing and going after trans people. Elon Musk, Ramaswamy land Trump admin roles

President-elect Trump has tapped tech entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead an advisory group focused on cutting federal spending and reducing the size of the government.

Trump announced Tuesday that Musk and Ramaswamy would lead his ā€œDepartment of Government Efficiencyā€ (DOGE), an initiative meant to ā€œslash excess regulations, cut wasteful expendituresā€ and restructure federal agencies.

Fascists were always cringe. Himmler was a weird occultist. Goering was a drug addict still high on his glorious from World War I. Hitler was a profoundly lazy man with terrible taste in art. There were normal fascists (there had to be), but the leadership was always cringe. Unfortunately, being cringe doesnā€™t stop a movement from killing vast numbers of people.

Personally Iā€™m betting on Teapot Dome: somebody in the Cabinet will be convicted of something like bribery, foreign influence, or electoral interference; and the cleanup will implicate multiple other Cabinet members. Trump needs to do this at some point anyway; heā€™s already done all of the Nixon things like Watergate and interfering in foreign wars, and while he attempted a Teapot Dome last time with Ryan Zinke, he needs to actually have a Cabinet member removed or convicted in order to truly be a worse president than Warren G. Trump would have to literally kill all lawyers. Think of the DoJ as a pile of folks who all took an oath to the law itself. When pundits complain that itā€™s being ā€œweaponizedā€, theyā€™re actually talking about a facet of overcriminalization where the DoJā€™s limited attention can be controlled somewhat; itā€™s always going to be a full-power laser that targets what the law perceives as criminality.

In particular, the President doesnā€™t have the authority to tell the DoJ to stop an investigation, and the DoJ usually canā€™t tell individual prosecutors to stop filing motions. Trump wasnā€™t able to protect Cabinet member and Teapot Dome Candidate #2 Michael Flynn from prosecution, nor can he protect Eric Adams. The worst that he can do is a Saturday Night Massacre, where he fires lawyers until the investigations stop, and the entire pattern of special counsel is purpose-designed to prevent that from actually working.
