Hard to argue with. I’m 28 and work at a warehouse and the guys I’m friendly with on a surface level just to kinda be personable will say some shockingly homophobic and misogynistic things if you listen to them talk long enough. Like I can’t be friends with these guys, not really.

Conversely, I met this really cool guy the other day at a rockhound meet up who was super chill and left. He goes diving for jade in Big Sur and was super into scallops so I traded him some marine shell fossil conglomerates and lapidary slabs and polished agate nodules for chunks of jade and some weed. Me and my partner just vibed with him and his buddy and it was great. Guys that cool are few and far between unfortunately.

I don’t think this has gotten substantially worse since the 1950s or whenever there wasn’t a “male loneliness epidemic”.

One of the biggest reasons I quit my job in a male-dominated trade was the casual racism and sexism that they would drop like it was normal. Like we’d just be talking about whatever random bullshit we were on and they’d just spew some racist bullshit and continue on like nothing. I was cordial with the guys there but I still happily took a massive pay cut to work in a less male dominated workplace

Oh it was so cool. It was the 48th annual Stoddard Wells Rockhound Tailgate put on by the Victor Valley Gem and Mineral Club in California. 3 days of buying, selling, and trading rocks, gems, minerals, and fossils out in the Mojave Desert. You don’t even have to vend you can just camp and hang out. Look at cool rock collections during the day and smoke weed around the camp fire under the stars at night. Can’t wait to go again next year

At a certain point the line between “I’m not condemning everybody just individuals” and “I’ve been immediatly disappointed in 95 out of the last 100 people I’ve interacted with” becomes fairly indistinguishable

When your day to day is: Oh boy, new contractor, let’s not judge a book by its cover maybe this guys decent

      “Hey man how’s it going”

“Be a lot better if it weren’t for all the n-words taking all my money through taxes and that c-word taking the rest of it through child support”

You get beat down fairly quickly

Interactions with people in retail give me hope in humanity but paradoxically reduces my hope in civilisation.

There are still good patient people out there who are doing their best to put up with the bullshit, treat everybody without preconception and trying to make life better for everybody.

Our society has placed them on the lowest rung possible and we regularly get people smugly declaring they don’t think they deserve to be paid enough to survive, while those same hateful assholes get to drive home to their gated community and get patted on the back by a bunch of other people who have never done an honest day’s work in their life and completely agree with them those workers are lazy and entitled.

And then on the other end I go back to my poor small town community and go by a bunch of “fuck your feelings” flags being flown above confederate flags by people being ground to dust by the same system and never for a second thinking to lay the balme at the feet of those rich useless assholes and instead agreeing with them that we should fuck the working class harder because in their mind that means punishing minorities

I am older than you. I have unfortunte news about my peers. They are still losers. Material conditions are garbage and about half of all people will always be below average. Despite this we know there are conditions that produce happier healthier people.

  • Kinda. Legit it is hard to make friends as a guy though. 24 you are still young but it gets harder and harder as you get older. The way that things are at least in the USA, men are basically expected to be in competition with eachother constantly. I mean, when I came out as trans I started making a bunch new friends. Idk. Lots of loser men out there though so you’re not wrong

Not doing the weird competitive man stuff and just being fun to be around can still easily make you dude friends as a dude. It doesn’t take much to be pleasant tly disarming cause they’re sick of being armed.

It’s because nobody gives a F about you.

My spouse told me about a number of times people stopped to help her when she had a flat or her car broke down. Also, one time when she bought something at an autoparts store and they helpfully installed it for her.

I had someone pull over to help one time, out of the dozens I’ve been broken down by the side of the road, and that one time, it was a cop. The only reason they did was bc it was 3AM and they probably wondered what I was getting up to. Other than that, never had anyone stop to help.

When I went to the store she’d recommended, the guy man-shamed me when I asked for help installing a part.

Generally speaking, men don’t get much mental, physical or financial help.

I’m not saying women have it great (they don’t), but there’s a lot more to it than “guise suq!”.

You should move to the upper Midwest, our whole thing is treating everyone the way traditional men treated women. Other dudes install shit for me all the time, and we all hold the door open for each other. Or maybe I’m just good looking and they’re a bit bi, idk

Yea I also don’t interact with anybody that I graduated high-school with because they’re all exhausting lying stupid and also self righteous to the point of being outwardly confrontational.

Last time a friend group from high school hung out somebody I considered a close friend in high school said homeless people should just get a job if they don’t like being homeless and then got way too drunk and tried to fight another one of our friends because we didn’t all agree he was rhe best at soccer basketball AND baseball while we were in high school.

I don’t blame anybody for not wanting to be around them unless required by contract.

I live down the road from a college and my apartment is surrounded by frat houses and haloween night was this guy all over my block. It was quite a show. First off, you cannot keep a shirt on these dudes after their third drink. Second, they are really really bad at drinking, just blasting down a wade boggs style of light beer in the stupidestly short time period, immediately getting into fights and both parties looking embarrassing as fuck cause they’ve only fought while playing hockey and always hockey fight instead of real fight and due to the amount of water they’ve consumed with their light beer they then begin barfing uncontrollably after getting a punch to the gut or just running around like a dork too much. Now I’ve gotten all kinds of wasted and cause numerous municipal issues. My friend and I used to drink bourbon I’m an alley all day and then do coke and go out at 3am and re-arrange pylons to direct traffic into construction or break store windows and other cool punk shit. These dudes aren’t even cool party jocks I saw in movies, they’re kids who can’t hold their liquor wasting themselves out within 2 hours. This is 14 year old stuff.
