“why don’t presidents fight the war, why do they always send the poor”
Yeah, kings and presidents should go and hand fight their opponent and their people should watch them fight while eating popcorn and place bets, instead those low dick effort presidents and kings send innocent people to die for them, while them are hiding in their castles or bunkers. Fuck you
And the coils grow ever tighter.
We also have WMD. WMD of course being an acronym for Weird, Megalomaniacal Dictator.
Tale as old as time.
didn’t the UN find that they were enriching uranium past what was required for nuclear power, which indicates they’re enriching it for nuclear weapons? To my knowledge this is the first time in something like 20 years that this has happened
to be clear, fuck israel for this escalation and their horrific genocide. There is no justification even if Iran had a fleet of WMDs.
I’m genuinely not sure how similar Iraq is to this
Were you too young for Iraq?
It was a bit different, Americans were baying for revenge after 9/11, but also many people were adamantly against going to war.
I think there was less evidence of any WMD, everyone knew it was bullshit, but someone had to pay for 9/11.
In this case, the USA doesn’t really give a shit about Iran, nobody has a score to settle, but the killer is - and the thing I remember from last time - is that at the beginning everyone was like cut the bullshit - but as time went along the media convinced a majority it was a good idea.
The same will happen here, they just haven’t had a chance to catch up yet.
What did Iraq have to do with 9/11?
Nothing except that it’s in the middle east and is majority Muslim.
That’s all the American public needed.
Depressingly accurate I think. It resulted in very large protests that achieved nothing here. I wonder if Iran would lead to even more protesting, or if support will be limited to avoid that.
I was too young. I realize i’m probably splitting hairs. The differences b/w both situations feel large enough that lazily conflating the two feels incorrect, even though they are certainly similar enough to compare.
Trump is somehow a more stupid, meaner W. There’s no 9/11 he can use to whip up nationalistic frenzy. Israel has aggressed first & is trying to drag the world into a conflict that’s already hugely unpopular. Maybe I’m hoping Middle East War # gazillion evaporates as US interest does. I’m hoping this conflict is dissimilar enough from Iraq to turn out differently, and for us to have learned something in the interceding 20+ years
Yeah but so is North Korea. Plutonium, that is, not uranium, but still. Who cares? Could you imagine if South Korea just randomly started bombing their “nuclear engineers” + civilians and then US piped in?
No because Kim said nice words to Trump and wrote him a love letter.
Totally agree! This situation is unbelievably stupid
Who gives a fuck?
The whole crux of the post is about this idk, I guess I do. Sorry that upset you - genuinely just discussing
People who don’t want to get nuked
Anyone who doesn’t want to cause hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths, untold suffering, destruction of world heritage sites and possible nuclear contamination of large areas of land?
In other words, anyone who isn’t a psychopath.
Sure bro, Iran’s going to get nukes and use them for mass murder and not defending themselves from neo-crusaders, because they’re just gagging to have their entire population killed under MAD
I think you have misinterpreted my comment. I care because I think this would be orders of magnitude worse than the US invasion of Iraq.
It should be noted that this is occurring in the context of a genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, where people are being forced to queue for “aid”, and then get shelled by israeli tanks. Forty-eight people were killed yesterday in such a manner, I believe the death toll for today was around fifty. This is being done with the tacit blessing of the “West” to the point some of our more psychotic politicians have openly called for harms to be brought to people who as a matter of conscience are attempting to deliver aid on their own, or who are protesting against it on humanitarian grounds. I can’t wait to see the next round of protests - No Kings folks marching beside the MTG MAGA Anti-War crowd, who will shortly be further radicalized after their first true encounters with systematic police brutality.
In Iran’s case, they were hit with an unprovoked first strike, on civilian targets no less- including striking a nuclear facility that violates both the UN charter and IAEA regulations, as well as their academics who are by definition illegal targets regardless of any association with a nuclear program or not. This also violates basic decency and common sense. If radioactive material is released from these enrichment plants, it’s possible the land there could be poisoned for generations to come. No credible sources back a claim that Iran was even attempting to build a nuclear weapon, and their enrichment program was possibly the most closely monitored such example in the world. What we are going to see is endless and shameless lying, paranoia and conspiracy peddling to build public support for more military adventurism, just like the build up to the disastrous invasion of Iraq. Historically, the west has shown itself to be untrustworthy but in this case, a new low was well and truly reached. What use is the contraption of law if nobody abides by them? Civilization is primarily built on trust, and the deepest sin the West is committing is that we are in the process of well and truly shredding that trust, within and without.
Historically, they’ve been treated poorly by successive Western meddling throughout the 20th century. An engineered coup after their Socialist elected PM (Mohammad Mosaddegh) attempted to nationalize oil production in the context of the Cold War put an US vassal in charge. This “Shah” generated enough unrest to force a popular uprising in 1979 after committing the sin of modernizing too quickly. It seems this was a common issue as world+dog were attempting to suddenly match Western industrial outputs at any human cost. which has been in power ever since. Iran is a more complex and diverse society than most people realize, it’s over 90 million people and is not a poor or inconsequential nation. Even if the current government is overthrown, Iran itself isn’t going to go anywhere and they would be back within a few decades in some shape or form.
Furthermore, internal israeli politics play a part - the current government launched this attack on the day there was consideration to dissolve that government. Starting a war is a great way to shut down internal dissent.
It’s going to be interesting, and exceedingly revolting, to watch how the symphony of utter fools gear up to build support for yet another psychopathic war in the Middle East, after we’ve watched our supposed “moral” ally shamelessly slaughter civilians for over a year.
Just so I’m clear - the psychopaths are people like chuck schumer, lindsay graham, randy fine, meghan mccain, merz, starmer (who literally just said “israel is doing our dirty work for us” ???).
As for folks who watch too much cable news and just wind up parroting calls to war… we need to get better at opposing this sophisticated brainwashing.
As for my personal feelings? My heart’s broken. Despite the fact I probably have very little in common and wouldn’t do very well under an authoritarian religious government such as in the case of Iran, I don’t think they deserve what’s currently happening to them, and they definitely don’t deserve what our frothing-at-the-mouth psychotic insane war hawks want to happen next. None of us deserve this. Even those that don’t know any better, and I’m utterly sick of being dragged around and impoverished by this brand of stupidity.
to be fair time is much older than Iran. But it is weird they’ve taken 40 years to develop a nuclear weapon when designs have been freely available online for over half that time.
The design isn’t the issue, it’s obtaining enough enriched material to actually construct it.
call me crazy, but I think the US has WMDs, they are not responsible enough to have them
Send in the Marines!
We know where they are. They’re in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat
~ Donald Rumsfeld
They have weapons and we have the receipts to prove it!
- Rummy
Every country who is anywhere close to a genocidal rogue state who explicitly stated they intend to do a Lebensraum and has attacked them unprovoked multiple times should have WMDs
Which country are we talking about now?
Your family has two TVs? You must be rich.
Is there any country that doesn’t have WMDs? Why is this even worth saying?
I mean… Iraq didn’t have them until we sold them the precursor chemicals to make them. What they were really upset about was that Saddam was supposed to use all those to kill Iranians and then the Kurds.
You do a guy a favour by helping him eliminate any of his dissonance and what do you get in return? The guy tries to invade Kuwait to pay off all the money he owes for invading Iran. When did empowering ruthless dictators to do your bidding get so complicated?
Mexico (we don’t know how)
Probably some of the very smallest ones, like the Marshall Islands or something
That’s what they want you to think
Monaco maybe? Oh wait no—they have many billionaires
What do you mean you’ve seen this one? It’s brand new.
I mean, clearly it works for the people.
“people”
Are we sure?
Plot twist Trump pulled a Bush by mixing up their countries and Trump actually intended to invade Iraq this time but got it mixed up with Iran (so a reverse Bush? hsub?).
Nice idea, but that would have required Trump to plan. Maybe he just said the wrong country since after every public speach his aids give him a concussion so he can start fresh next time.
I got wracked in Iraq, so I ran to Iran
