I’ve never heard of a republican being called a liberal though. I’ve seen memes with “libtards”, “libtears,” etc. That to me says liberals aren’t republicans.

I don’t know how you’ve been on Lemmy for two years and are hearing this for the first time. Previously:

Liberalism has a definition, which Marxists (and still many liberal Europeans) have never forgotten, though thanks to red scare purges and two cold wars, others have. Now, in Orwellian fashion, “liberalism” and “socialism” are floating signifiers, so we have liberals like Sanders calling themselves socialists, despite never calling for abolishing private ownership of the means of production.

Wikipedia: socialism: Socialism is an economic and political philosophy encompassing diverse economic and social systems characterised by social ownership of the means of production, as opposed to private ownership.

Wikipedia: liberalism: Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property and equality before the law.

“Private property,” a.k.a. “the means of production.”

What people in the US usually call “conservative” and what they call “liberal” are both liberal. Fascists in the Republican party aside, both it and the Democratic party are liberal parties. And liberalism and fascism have more in common than most people realize.

You might want to look at other comments in this thread:

@pelespirit blue MAGA attacking anti genocide and pro Palestinians, just like thy did about Ralf Nader or Jill Stein for the Fuck up of their policies.

They have voted for every anti Palestinian and pro genocide legislation and program GOP put ahead of them.

          and

@pelespirit Demonrats and rethuglicans must all be vanquished. Yeah Jill Stein’s pretty lame but I find I agree with you and other supporters on 90% of issues so it’s chill

What about those comments? The Palestinian genocide has been bipartisan, aided and abetted by both Biden and Trump. And on the campaign trail, Harris created no daylight between herself and Biden on the issue.

@pelespirit @davel Lmao I thought that Jill Stein guy you were mentioning was you. Keep being a weird little Zionist snitch it won’t make political opposition to fascism in the US real. None of you people are serious.

This just seems like a way to confuse the labels and cause infighting even if it’s somewhat correct. Like when republicans claim to be the party of Lincoln, they’re trying to step back from from their bad choices and racism so they can get reelected.

Yes, that was the purpose of the curated distinction. These labels were understood in the past and intentionally muddied to disrupt unity against them.

So now, for example, instead of a liberal party and a labor party, you have 2 liberal parties. One who identifies as “liberal” while the other identifies as “conservative” but they ultimately serve the same purpose.

They want to pass the narrative that liberalism isn’t a conservative ideology and vice versa because that serves their purposes. They want people to fight over which brand of liberalism they prefer, not whether they want liberalism at all.

              Because

              • propaganda is most effective when defining and directing allowable discourse
              • economics as understood by the electorate needs to be simplified and restricted in order to be controlled
              • terms like ‘liberal’ have been subsumed into identity politics to direct attention away from economic possibilities
              • social issues are emotional and so more manipulable
              • this misdirection allows for a controlled opposition, much like brands on a store shelf competing for sales yet made by the same company

@pelespirit Oh lol I thought you were a Jill Stein supporter I misread that. Can you restate what exactly your problem is? I’d prefer you take the book recommendation and go be annoying to someone else.

Yeah, I’m not sure how you’re confused by anything being said right now. You could have said “both are fascist” or something if that’s the point you wanted to make. What you said didn’t make any sense. You said “where are the republicans” when they were being mentioned. Idk. Weird. Maybe a typo or something.
