Question: where do you draw the line between when you totally space when someone else is talking and vs getting offended when you realize the other person isn’t listening?

edit - why isn’t strikethrough not working for the suggested formatting?

where do you draw the line

For me, life is too short to get offended that the other person isn’t listening.

Anyway, if everyone listened carefully to everything I say, I would have to be a lot more careful when I talk.

I’d say the line is from knowing the person. It’s one thing if someone isn’t listening, it’s another if they get distracted.

Nerotypicals do it too, just not as much.

When it happens to me, I’m honest and open about it “I’m really Slsorry, I just spaced out for a minute, would you mind repeating that?”

Sometimes I’ll ask them to repeat because I’m “not getting it”, which isn’t a lie.

my grandmother used to do it. she’d call me, ask me about my day, and then ignore and interrupt me once i began to answer her question. there are few things i can think of that were less infuriating. god rest her soul, she was a wonderful woman otherwise, but i still can’t shake that feeling of worthlessness i felt whenever she did that - and she never had any idea it mattered, because i’d never dare call out my own grandma.

Sometimes the formatting leaves a space between the last highlighted word and the inserted characters which breaks the formatting. I usually have to go in and remove that space and add one after the formatting.

      ~~Automatic ~~formatting.

      Fixed formatting.

Screenshot of editor. image of text above to preserve formatting.

i just realized what i thought was wrong… i’m using old.lemmy.world, which apparently doesn’t display it like you’d expect. oh well. old.lemmy has a ton of faults, but i still try to use it as much as possible over the other options. because i’m old, too.
