Summary
A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting fire to U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman’s office in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, citing anger over the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a TikTok ban.
The suspect admitted to the arson, which caused no injuries as the building was unoccupied.
The ban, upheld due to national security concerns about TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, has sparked significant public reactions.
Grothman had supported legislation to ban TikTok earlier in 2024.
Bread and circuses, people
A lot of people don’t seem to realize that a lot of small businesses and sole proprietors rely on tictok to generate business. For most people it’s just a stupid video app but for tens of thousands of americans, their livelihood just got ripped out from under them. I think those people have a right to be pissed.
If this shit causes more actual unrest than anything else from the last decade, I’m gonna fucking flip out. People are so fucking stupid.
They may take our lives.
But they will never take our brain rot.
Me googling “Fon du Lac” to see if it’s in Florida: Nope, Wisconson…good for you Florida, you dodged this one!
I find it hard to believe that Wisconsin would be lacking fondue. They’re pretty loud about their cheese.
I assumed it referred to a lake of fondue
I think people with publicly searchable addresses shouldn’t try to actively fuck over large swaths of people in one go. We should all act with integrity anyway, but boy when you’re public, it’s a really good idea to put in a little more effort on that front.
“Fuck over”. Lol, it’s a shitty video app, mate. Get some perspective.
I’m pretty new here but this seems like a Lemmy bubble take from what I’ve seen so far. An L take at that. Just because you were told it’s just a silly dance app, doesn’t make it true. The flow of information there is wild and it serves as a great source of 1st account world news and a great place for small and start up businesses to gain footing in the market. You are being overly reductive and I can’t figure out WHERE the vitriol is coming from.
You’re making a lot of assumptions and accusations given my reply was barely two sentences. “Vitriolic”. I’m not the one freaking out about a single app taking itself down for 12 hours, setting fire to offices, or jumping to an arsonist’s defense. Maybe work on figuring out where that response is coming from, instead, and why you think it’s more ok then what I said.
Where, in the fuck, did I defend the arsonist in my response? Your response however, did say that banning an app isn’t fucking over thousands and also called it a “silly dance app”. So again, vitriolic and reductive by calling it a silly dance app and concluding that OP should be the one to gain perspective, when you are only looking through your own.
I stand by what I said, and again, this sentiment seems rampant on Lemmy. Which is why I said this is a bubble. See? No assumptions, just reading comprehension.
Hope this helps 👌
Lol. Making shit up to be mad about.
Where…did I defend the arsonist
You didn’t. And I didn’t say you did.
Your response however, did say [it’s] a “silly dance app”
You keep trying to put words in my mouth. I said “shitty video app”. Admittedly course, but hardly “vitriolic” compared to setting someone’s workplace on fire. I ask again why you think that’s seemingly so much less offensive to you than my three word critique.
this sentiment seems rampant on Lemmy. Which is why I said this is a bubble.
Not what a bubble is.
See?
Noassumptions, just [no] reading comprehension.ftfy
Ah yes, I did mess that up, “shitty video app”, sorry. The conglomerate of Lemmy is all starting to sound the same 🤣. Now, I would still say is a vitriol response to people losing their right to assemble and freedom of speech, along with many people’s form of income. It’s at the very least callous and lacks empathy.
As for the arsonist portion: “jumping to an arsonist’s defense” - You 🥴 Also notice how you mentioned it again, in the next follow up. That’s called rhetoric and your intention is clear. Cool? Cool.
A bubble is where a singular set of viewpoints are dominant and reinforced by the in-group while any outside perspectives are removed or written off with some in-group jargon. I would say this community fits that quite well actually.
See?
Noassumptions, just [no] reading comprehension.
I get the sentiment but there’s people that actually make their living on this platform. So for someone shouting at someone else to get some perspective maybe you want to curtail your messaging.
The that that someone did this, proves these WEBSITES are dangerous to citizens mentality.
Oh, it’s you again.
I think it’s pointless to point out that nobody else is stupid enough to think this, but here I am saying it anyway.
What’s more dangerous to me is the fact that the government is trying to restrict our sources of information. People are PISSED. And should they be setting fire to congressmen’s offices? Nah but there’s a reason people have fled to another Chinese app in protest.
What is that reason because I don’t get it?
Because if the US is putting up a firewall then it’s no better than China.
banning apps from being published in app stores isn’t even close to the same thing as the great firewall.
You just made me realize that TikTok is still available in browser form. What a bunch of fuss over nothing.
Internet has put a lot of effort into being free (except A Shit Pie trying to party ruin it).
