My birthday is this month and I’d like to do something for it, but all my friends abandoned me when I got sick, I’ve got no-one to hang out with. It’s cold outside and I’m recovering from a stroke and still have trouble walking, so I’d need to do something in my own home. It also needs to be free as I have no income at all, so things like renting a film off amazon or whatever are off limits.

Any suggestions? Years ago I would have celebrated with some magic mushrooms but aside from the financial aspect, I don’t even know who to get them off any more. I’m totally out of ideas. Just something that will make the day feel a bit special and different from every other day.

I’d need to do something in my own home. It also needs to be free as I have no income at all,

I find that thoroughly cleaning my place is the best gift I can give to myself. But also:

    • you can read
    • you can make crafts (all you need is paper and you can make wheat paste/glue with flour and water)
    • you can count things
    • you can attempt to reconnect with some friends
    • you can play video games (pirate them of course)
    • you can write a story, poem, song
    • you can draw something
    • you can learn to code, you can make a website
    • you could write an essay or an article
    • you can begin writing a journal
    • you can make a photo album
    • you can look at funny videos online
    • you can listen to music, spend the day discovering new artists

so things like renting a film off amazon or whatever are off limits.

You can pirate movies and TV shows.

I don’t even know who to get them off any more.

If you live in Europe, you can order grow kits online as the spores are not illegal. It is a bit pricey (€30-50) but actual spores are much cheaper (~€10) and then you make DIY grow cakes using brown rice and vermiculite (you can find many guides online).

Thanks for the tips. Over previous years I have ordered several grow kits from Europe, but they never turned out well. Either didn’t grow at all, went mouldy or weren’t potent. And nowadays I can’t afford it anyway.

        Either didn’t grow at all,

        They need warmth, 25-30°C.

        went mouldy

They need a sterile environment, or as sterile as possible. Even water that you use to spray the grow bag can have harmful organisms in it.

        or weren’t potent.

Probably has to do with grow conditions, darkness, light, warmth, moisture, etc.

Sleep in, bundle up, and sit outside. Tell random people it’s your birthday, build a snow or blanket fort, bake some sweets, and cuddle up under a blanket with your favorite book or show.

I’m in a similar spot, comrade, and this is what I did on my birthday. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you have a happy birthday!

You could write letters to yourself with themes: letter for past self, for when you’re feeling down, for when you’re celebrating something in the future, for when you’re feeling aimless, for your next birthday, etc. might have some similar introspective epiphanies like a mushroom trip would!
