This is a Bavarian specialty called “Öbergruatznloafdl”.
It’s made from oats, rye beer, Oabatzder cheese and cow hooves.

Traditionally it is served by a proposing husband to a would-be-bride’s family. Large amounts of salt are added to symbolize that the marriage won’t spoil, and to demonstrate wealth.

Oh no, her opinion doesn’t factor into it.

Interesting! There is a similar specialty in Austria called Schmiaschrischnuepflmarfl but the ingredients usually include some chamois liver as well. And it’s used for a slightly different purpose since it’s normally served at a funeral to remind the attendance about the musculature of the legs of the departed.

As always, the Austrians are copying and perverting our sacred, ancient customs.
        Chamois? Disgusting!

I don’t understand how any of this results in the slice being larger than the loaf.

The bread is a receptacle into which the husband must yell SPRICH ZANGENDEUTSCH until it no longer causes physical pain.
