  • you’re being way too pessimistic about this. governments have been trying to block access to information online for decades, and it’s never been successful. even if a future like you imagine comes to pass, VPNs don’t need to be commercial, and they can also be peer-to-peer. if it gets anywhere as bad you think it will, we’ll see a wider adoption of tech like I2P and local mesh networks, or people running their own shadow VPNs with their friends. it’s one thing for them to go after mullvad or proton or whatever big VPN you like, but it’s another thing entirely to squash private VPNs that people can already put up with very little effort. especially since they would have no idea they even exist.

you should absolutely fight censorship like this, but don’t ever think that them passing legislation is the end of the fight. it’s only the beginning, and there are millions more of us than there are of them.

  • don’t use the discourse forum, most support is done on the very active Discord forum, where they have threaded rooms for people to open support tickets in.

also, Gaming Mode is very iffy on NVIDIA. the hybrid GPU situation doesn’t make it easier. if you don’t want to disable your iGPU, then picking an image without Game Mode is your best option. Even if you do disable the iGPU, you can expect further problems with it in the future if you are on NVIDIA. as of right now, Game Mode was built with the Steam Deck hardware in mind, and Valve has not yet perfected support for other hardware.

  • a typical CPU in a phone would do just fine. AI effects in photo and video started coming out in phones before new phones started having dedicated hardware to accelerate it. phones have been doing stuff as intensive as that for years. for example, iPhones have been able to make complex and precise full scale textured replicas of real world environments that you can then import into Blender using their lidar capabilities for years. that’s quite a bit more intensive of a process than using AI to edit a video.

and as for a PC, there isn’t anything you can do to edit a video using AI that a PC CPU would not be able to handle. if a 10 year old laptop can generate video out of thin air using genAI, then applying a sharpening effect would be a piece of cake. hell, I’ve done stable diffusion on a laptop with just 4GB of VRAM. it’s quite a bit slower than with a faster PC, but certainly doable.
