I’ve carefully curated things to where my feed is actually pretty good and I’ve had little to no problems with it. Then out of nowhere I’m getting all these transphobic recommendations, especially detransitioner content. It was a wild departure from the usual and way beyond the amount of topic specific recs that I’ll get if I look up something specific. It was really gross and I was already having a dysphoria day. Fuck YouTube.

That still let’s the algo allow that topic though. Fortunately I went sicko mode and kept scrolling where I would see the same channel rec twice. First it’s ‘not interested’ then ‘don’t rec this channel’. This is how I’ve curated a pretty nice feed for myself.

Yeah, I’ve been getting some no name nobody channels attacking Hasan when I frequently watch 1+ hour videos of his. I made the mistake of clicking on one about a month ago, it was basically ‘vuvuzella 1984 no iphone why you have money’ tier slop just clip chimping him.
(Slightly offtopic but) I’ve spent a lot of time violently wrangling the Youtube recs over the years, but within the past maybe four months I feel like it’s kind of beyond what I can control. Watch one video on a Chinese Type 50 and suddenly I have some big silly chud with a giant caliber hunting rifle in my recs. Search up Morrowind stuff even once and it’s an AVALANCHE of goddamn skyrim mod videos. I hate it.
It’s unusable and so insistent. I watched stuff related to China sometimes to kill time at work (not related to my home profile) and since January it has had the same Uncle Roger short at the top of the recommendeded list.
Like, surely if I haven’t watched it by now I’m never going to watch it, right? It tries so hard to railroad you towards higher-view count, higher engagement content that keeps people glooped into the platform.
You would think! Sometimes I’ll slam “Not Interested” and it’ll still recommend that channel, it’s weird. I ain’t glooped the way they think I am…
Yeah that’s the thing, because I’m at work I’m not logged in so I can’t block/hit ‘Not interested’ on channels and videos. If I clear history and see the default page YouTube shows, it’s absolutely galling, like, I didn’t realise how glooped in some of my ‘friends’ were until they started referencing shit I’d seen pushed to the front page that day/day before.
Oh, I guess piped and invidious wouldn’t help much in this case. Scary circumstances…

Also I give my general endorsement to blocktube, it’s served me well and allowed me to curate my experience without ever logging in to a youtube account. I’ve blocked almost 200 channels, with roughly 60% of them being middle-aged men whining about disney movies that were clearly made for little girls.
I’ve reported these videos time after time explaining that I am queer and these anti trans videos and ADS seem to target queer and pro trans videos.
One of the tactics is to attempt to deny pro LGBTQ+ videos ads or turn viewers away. The other is cruelty. YouTube doesn’t give a fuck. Google doesn’t give a fuck. They see hate $$ and they only see $$.
The hate perpetuates through society, even if you vpn up switch languages they still find hateful trash to throw at you and I’d almost be astonished if I didn’t remember fascism is a grift.
Not transphobic stuff, but whenever I search anything one of the results is always the same weird racist (ASIAN STEREOTYPES) video the the thumbnail showing a person driving with a special hat that makes their eyes squinty…
It doesn’t matter if I’m searching for cute cat videos or King Gizzard, it always shows up. You can’t do the “not interested” on search results either.
