    Choco Tacos

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choco_Taco

Klondike discontinued the Choco Taco in July 2022.[4] According to an Associated Press fact check, Klondike discontinued the product due to a sharp increase in demand across its brands and to ensure the availability of the remainder of its products.[12] However, Klondike tweeted that “we are discussing next steps, including what to do with the last 912 (we counted) tacos at HQ. Stay tuned…” on July 28, 2022,[13] but have never followed up on this claim.

On July 25, 2022 Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted at Unilever, offering to buy the rights to the product.[14] When asked about this by Fortune, Ohanian confirmed that the offer was “very serious” but did not yet have any news to share.[15][16]

Well, Reddit is IPOing right now, so if it goes well, maybe he’ll bring it back.

EDIT: There’s also some guy I remember NPR’s Planet Money doing a thing on who brought back Hydrox (the cookie that Oreo was a clone of). The trademark wasn’t being defended and the product was abandoned, and it looks like he’s still in business. So even if the original manufacturer isn’t interested, given capital and determination, it is possible to resurrect products.

This site says that a take on it is coming back this summer:

During Taco Bell’s recent Live Mas Live event, the chain announced a collaboration with Portland-based ice cream maker Salt & Straw, and the two of them have plans to bring a version of the Choco Taco back into our lives.

According to an Instagram post from Salt & Straw, the new version will involve a taco-shaped waffle cone filled with cinnamon ancho ice cream that has been dipped in a single-origin chocolate sauce. Each taco will be served with three different sauces and a cheesecake dip.

“A version of” does not inspire confidence in me. I like Salt & Straw, it’s good ice cream. The Choco Taco was not good ice cream. It was a stale sort-of-waffle-cone shell, acceptable vanilla ice cream with fudge swirl, dipped in cheap chocolate with chopped peanuts. And they were perfect. This new thing will probably cost eight dollars and taste great but it will not fill the nostalgic space or my freezer.
