Looking for recommendations on a streaming box to connect my TV to plex. I have a lot of 4k blu ray rips averaging 80-100mbps and I’m struggling to find a client that can handle it. First I had a Roku, which had network bandwidth issues. So I moved to the new fire stick 4k max, which still buffers like crazy. I don’t think its network related because its pulling 500mbps down, and my laptop (which pulls 300 down) can stream it just fine. So any recommendations on a tv streaming box? I’ve seen the Nvidia shield, and the Mecool KM2 plus deluxe but want to get some opinions before buying anything. Thanks!

I was thinking about an apple TV, but I’m not in the apple ecosystem so I’m not sure how well it would work for me. Shame, it does look like a great device

    • nvidia shield if your main theater and you want good upscaling and audio
    • Wal-Mart Onn android tv for smaller rooms/tvs. You can add an ethernet hub, external audio, and storage with an OTG cable
    • replace the stock launcher with projectivy

I have had no problems using my Roku Ultra. I would check to make sure there isn’t any transcoding occurring on playback before buying something else. If there is you might try troubleshooting that before buying a new device.

No transcoding, it’s doing direct play for video and audio. The roku eventually gives up and plex gives a “your network is not good enough” error unfortunately

Good to know! I think I’m just gonna bite the bullet and get a shield pro then. Thanks!

I have a Roku Express 4k and the only issues I have are the lack of TrueHD support, but as I found in my research, very few players support it.

I’m betting your issue is with codec compatibility and not bitrate as 12.5MBps isn’t anything demanding on modern hardware. I’d check the audio and video codecs of these files to see if there’s a common denominator.

Good idea. I checked and it’s not transcoding, just direct play for audio/video so it’s not codecs. I’m still leaning towards bit rate being too high for the fire stick processor for now
