I’ve been on the internet for a long, long while, and recently the internet has been becoming more and more racist, misogynist, etc. A lot of media apps rolled back their protections of LGBTQ+ people a hot while ago, and my old home of Reddit has devolved into pure insanity. There were new subs popping up left and right that only existed just to be racist and misogynist, it was MADDENING. Before Trump got elected, subs like that would be banned in like… a month, now they’re just letting that shit slide. Christ even I got banned for calling out misogyny. It’s gonna be damn near impossible to abandon. There’s a fuckload of communities and people there, but, oh well… But looking outside of Reddit, it feels like EVERYWHERE is a path into the alt-right pipeline, it’s MADDENING. It’s gotten this bad and it hasn’t even completed a full fucking year, I feel like I’m losing my goddamn mind My only real methods of communicating to people have been limited to Discord and here… it’s so lonely

    I agree.

I have pretty much left Reddit because all of the “left wing” subreddits leave a lot to be desired. GreenAndPleasant got invaded by libs and EU supporters, ShitLiberalsSay can be hostile towards veganism and anarchists, most of the socialist and anarchist subreddits are ultra at best, and VeganCircleJerk was also hijacked by libs and Bernie Sanders stans.

Discord is pretty shit too. I only still use it because my real life friend has a server, and even that I don’t use much (I had a conversation with someone there who thought the Democrats were communist and didn’t know who Nelson Mandela was.)

BlueSky? Invaded by libs. Twitter? Liberal space that got scratched. TikTok? Shit. Tumblr? I don’t like the interface so can’t say.

Yeah it is maddening. The powers that be put a lot of money into manufacturing right-wing consent on the internet, and it seems all that grooming paid off for them because holy shit it’s hell in most spaces.

Social media spaces outside of here feel like walking back into the early 2010s. It’s all “ironic” homophobia, ableism and suicide jokes.

That’s the biggest issue when it comes to communities. So few people actually engage, it’s sad.

What’s also sad is how hard it is to get people to join. It feels like people will only relocate during the worst possible conditions, Everyone moved to Rednote because Tiktok got banned, A good chunk of people moved to Bluesky because Elon Musk bought twitter and let all the nazis loose. It’s gonna take Reddit crashing for people to actually move here, it’s so sad :(

It’s something we should think about and discuss as a community. We’ve learned a lot of lessons about “lifeboating” other communities, but I think it’s possible to do it right. I think we could plan ahead and possibly do it successfully when the moment comes.

I’ve often thought that the best lifeboating support that we should do is technical advice on how another community can build their own lemmy instance. It avoids a “too many eggs in one basket” situation, and it lets both communities remain distinct while still being able to interact easily.

Facebook has a few leftist carveouts, or had. It’s been like a year since Ive posted anything on it.

Importantly, facebook will stuff topics it doesnt like, and its censorship algos are super good

Wait, you found Leftist Discord? Hook me up lol.

This sort of mirrors why I’m probably gonna stop trying to organize for the PSL in my city. I thought I was gonna be able to ride the wave of radlib protests and stuff and get over to the left and get them to start reading and stuff. But no one wants change. No one wants to actually do the work. They just want to be angry. And I mean, the Red Scare did one hell of a number on the American people.

I’d settle for just have a small space like a forum to talk about some of my interests, it wouldn’t necessarily have to be leftist. Keeping out the chuds, misogyny, racism, anti-LGBT etc. would obviously be a must though, which is one of the reasons I hate reddit-logo because they don’t do a good job of that, putting it mildly.

Unfortunately the big social media platforms killed forums and now all we have left is Discord, and I don’t like Discord because it’s essentially a chat room and 20 years or so ago I realized I prefer forums to chat rooms.

Yeah, it really is you gotta find a hyper specific Fandom and stick to it. Chapo is the OG leftist podcast from which all others are called liberals.

Other than them it is like, deprogram, true anon… I don’t know of any others. I know there are a few. Then like the psl and some dsa chapters

There’s nothing to apologize for. We’re social animals, and we seek solace in like -minded people. I’ve noticed an unsettling uptick of misogyny and ableism on Lemmy, too. But we have each other here, and that’s a small comfort that I’m grateful to have.
