        I love UUs. Their existence is so weird.

        Lots of denominations have split or merged through the years. For instance the Methodists split from the Episcopalians and later merged with the United Brethren to form the United Methodist Church, which very recently split into the Global Methodist (hates gay people) and United Methodist (gay is OK).

        But the thing that’s different about the UUs is that the Unitarians were a Christian denomination and the Universalists were not. It’s a merger of Christian and a non-Christian sects that worked out really well.

        It’s neat.

          I love being a UU and am extremely benefitted by having my congregation & a personal connection with God, after +20 years of being a hardline atheist. I needed my own space & affordance to explore, redefine terms, and do my own spiritual learning.

          One weird outcome for me was reading the Bible on my own. I don’t consider myself a Christian (ex-Catholic / ex-Atheist), but I was getting frustrated with MAGA’s association with Christ while being so misaligned with the teachings. I know enough now to quote my favorite passages, because if I ever get in a pinch in this country, I’m going to quote the Bible.

          Every MAGA person needs to read Matthew 25:32 several times, along with James 1:19 & James 2:25, and especially John 13:34. You get to heaven by helping the poor, helping the foreigner, helping those in prison, not by just claiming you follow Christ. If your actions don’t come from love, then they don’t follow Christ. It’s mind blowing to me that this regime is aligned with Christianity in public opinion.

          And every UU congregation I’ve ever seen has pretty explicitly NOT been Xian. Not even in a watered-down way. I’ve watched their services online, and there’s been no Christ-talk, and no sky-daddy talk at all. I think that each UU congregation has wide leeway to do its own thing, and for most, that thing does not include identifying as Xian.

      I’m down, but it would require reintegration into the shit stain that is organized religion. This is also coming from an ex minister. Once you’re behind that pulpit, your words are law. Getting into that place where a large congregation would actually listen to you would most likely require some moral compromises.

      Are you queer? You are irrelevant.

      Are you not white? You are irrelevant.

      Are you sexualy active? You are irrelevant.

      Are you pregnant? You are irrelevant.

      Are you compassionate? You are irrelevant.

      Your job is to interpret the Bible in a way that people enjoy. You reinforce their ideals. I have no idea how to pull everyone I knew into a 180°.

      How do you propose we change these brainwashed peoples’ minds? If you have legitimate theory, I’m listening. All I can think of is showing up to church and talking to people, but it SUCKS there.

      One example:

      “ABORTION IS MURDER”

      “It can’t think yet”

      “IT HAS A SOUL”

      How do I respond to that? What can I possibly tell a person that’s that nieve that they’re being sexist?

      I witnessed people use their time to speak against the church while they were on stage. They get pulled off and disappeared (not killed, blacklisted). A lot of the people there are dependent on the church, so they can’t speak up. So even if you have the stage, you maybe have 5 minutes. Change the world. Go for it. This is coming from the experience of an ex minister at the Salvation Army.

        Respectfully, UU is very different than this, in my personal experience. It’s precisely because UU doesn’t have strong dogmatic ties that I like it. The 7 principles are pretty standard moral positions. Sacred texts inform practice but do not dictate it either.

            I never called them evil. I’m saying organized religions are used by leaders to justify evil. In America, they’re typically told to be hostile to Muslims. They’re different, therefore they are wrong.

            Religion turns everything into an US vs THEM mentality. But easily 95+% of people are just normal people. We’re all the same. Most people just want to live in peace. Dividing people will always generate hate.

                Well said. I’ve watched the left tear things to shreds, and it seems to be mostly online (I hope - though I do know a few of these types IRL). The purity tests and the more-leftist-than-thou and the constant calls to have certain people take a back seat and let the $MINORITY_GROUP do all the speaking is just so tiresome.

                I’m white, I’m male, and I’m cishet and I have zero plans to leave, but I have to say that the left is often just terrible at trying to appeal to a broader base. Yes, we get it - all should have a voice. But it gets just a bit tiresome to hear that my voice should somehow matter a bit less because of what boxes I happen to tick off, or that someone else’s voice should matter more because they tick off some box(es). Just as an example…and while demographics are changing, it would be a hell of a lot easier to win elections and effect actual real change if we would stop alienating so many people with this toxic bullshit. And honestly? I think some of the online people are plants that are TRYING to alienate a lot of the potential voting base and turning liberals and leftists into caricatures.
