Elon Musk publicly mused about creating a new political party this week, an idea that could escalate the billionaire’s feud with his onetime ally President Trump.
Musk first floated the idea on Thursday. In between jabs at Mr. Trump, the billionaire posted a poll to X asking his 220 million followers if they think it’s “time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle.”
A day later, Musk noted that 80% of respondents to the poll backed the idea.
“This is fate,” he wrote Friday evening.
Musk then endorsed a fan’s suggestion that he name it the “America Party.” The name bears a resemblance to America PAC, the political action committee founded by Musk last year that was his main vehicle for spending $239 million to help elect Mr. Trump and other Republican candidates in 2024.
Starting a new political party is easier said than done. The Democratic and Republican parties, and some of the larger third parties, already have ballot access in virtually every state, so an upstart party that hopes to be competitive would need to navigate a web of state-by-state rules to get its candidates on the ballot.
And while Musk — the world’s richest person — is legally allowed to pour unlimited money into his America PAC because it is organized as an independent super PAC, donations to formal political parties are capped at well under $1 million, per the Federal Election Commission’s contribution limits for 2025-2026 federal elections.
It’s not clear how serious Musk is about the idea of breaking with the Republican Party. Later Friday, the billionaire replied “Ok” to a person who argued “the best bang for your buck” is to get involved in GOP primaries. He also seemed to entertain a post that suggested reforming one of the main parties “from the inside out” instead of starting a third party, replying “Hmm.”
Still, Musk’s musings about starting a new political party could signal he plans to stay engaged in politics, and may try to challenge Mr. Trump’s influence.
Musk said last month he planned on dialing back his political spending generally, saying at the time that he didn’t “see a reason” to keep putting his money into politics, though he left open the possibility of getting involved again. His time leading the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency also came to an end last week, with Mr. Trump publicly expressing support.
But Musk began directly challenging Mr. Trump on Tuesday, calling the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — a sprawling domestic policy bill backed by Mr. Trump — a “disgusting abomination” and urging lawmakers to vote against it. The two men publicly sparred on Thursday, with Mr. Trump threatening to cut off subsidies to Musk’s companies, while Musk claimed the president was ungrateful for the hundreds of millions he poured into helping the 2024 Trump campaign.
Musk entered the congressional fray at a delicate moment for the GOP. The party’s domestic policy bill narrowly passed the House last month, but it still needs to go through the Senate, and if the upper chamber makes any changes, it will need to head back to the House again.
Musk offered a pointed suggestion Thursday afternoon to any congressional Republicans who may be unsure of whether to side with him or the president, writing on X: “Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years.”
Musk then endorsed a fan’s suggestion that he name it the “America Party.”
Then another user said that it’s very important to learn from history, so the tentative name became “American History Party.” The final proposal for the name came from Elon himself, who complemented the previous option by - as he often does - adding the letter X, resulting in “American History 𝕏 Party”.
After much brainstorming, the Party’s symbol was finally defined as a black X over a solid white circle, representing both Black and White Americans. There are also shorter lines that protrude at a 90º angle from the four tips of the X, representing how the Party takes a sharp turn away from traditional politics.
The final touch that really brought all elements together was was that, in order to represent its victory over the evils of communism, the American History 𝕏 Party’s symbol was then placed over a red background. Top Democrats are eager to engage in conversations with the new party, seeking to form a broad coalition across the aisle.
This is the stupidest shit. Fucking what do right wingers have to fight about, who gets to eat the most babies?
I mean, we do have the democrats and republicans. Right-wing infighting is nothing new.
Unironically who gets to do the most graft
They philosophically agree with each other in lock step. They just disagree over who should have absolute power. This is why musk bought a space company too, so he could start a new planet where he was the unquestioned king.
The uni-party with two branches is entrenched within system, even the richest man in the world can’t meaningfully change it. State election laws essentially guarantee you gotta be Dem or Rep with allowance for some occasional independents.
We, as communists, should pay no mind to this clown or his new circus for multiple reasons. A) Capital is the true ruler of the empire, even if the color of the makeup changes. B) This is great man theory at it’s finest to think one guy can disrupt the system when it’s clear that system is built to absorb such demagogues (Trump). C) While Musk and Trump’s cat fight is very much real, it’s all political theater. Drama for the country that loves spectacle above anything material.
A third party that is anti-tax, pro-business, pro-war, anti-woke, but the distinguishing feature of this party is that nobody can make fun of Elon.
And when somebody is found guilty of making fun of Elon - he does a poll to determine the manner of their death.

Firing squad
-
Lethal injection
-
Method X (aka Elon’s choice)
-
Hanging

Trebuchet yeet

Dems: “Oh, now can vote for the third party”
This is the move that is needed to go fully fascist. The Republican party has too much history and baggage and as evil as they are, they can’t separate the wheeze from the fash in their leadership.
Starting a new party and putting all the money and vote manipulation techniques behind it is like an inverse night of the long knives. It purges everyone who isn’t fascist immediately and attracts everyone who is.
This may very well be the outcome of the slumber party they all had for the last few months and the reason for the theatrical rift. This is a terrifying prospect.
I see what you’re saying but I don’t think any elected or high ranking Republican official would be opposed to fascism if it was led by the Republicans. Most of their voters would welcome it too.
Opposed to"fascism"? No. Opposed to specific actions deemed required by leadership, likely
It is worrying, but at least if all the fascists get into their own party it will make an easier target
I don’t think that’s terribly helpful, sadly
Musk then endorsed a fan’s suggestion that he name it the “America Party.”
The brightest minds on the right at work folks
Star Citizen worldbuilding ass name
Probably how this got the name the “Know Nothing Party” 170 years ago.
Something something an inflection point something let them fight
also seemed to entertain a post that suggested reforming one of the main parties “from the inside out” instead of starting a third party
New democratic party just dropped
I mean, they’re already trying to court him lmao
I want everyone to shout “both sides are the same” when these Kissinger geriatric Dems bring him into the fold.
Yeah but one party is ran by a cheeeeto. They are not the same.
Wait, what? I thought they’d at least take a few weeks before publicly rehabilitating him.
Not left, not right, downward (into the k hole)
our country needs to be rid of this cancer
So we’re doing Ross Perot again?
The “America Party”
Most brilliant mind in the world.
Edit: not even his idea for a name. One of his brain child fans. So he looked at it and was like, “yeah, that’s the best that’s gonna come out of my millions of followers”
“yeah, that’s the best that’s gonna come out of my millions of followers”
He’s probably not wrong tbh. Only people dumber than Musk are the people who worship him.
As a non-american, and someone who would not face the immediate short term consequences of this probably, the prospect of breaking the american 2-party system from the right or the center (arguably) isn’t any worse than letting it go on as it is.
For one because it opens broadens the possibility for a mainstream american labour party (which just by existing can already have the possibility to change the world frankly) to compete with the democrats, since there would be more competitive 3-way races where dems are in third place and easier to surpass
But mainly because the system has been incredibly stable and it structures the entirety of how mainstream political life works, because of that it can consistently deliver governing majorities in all levels of governing the country which means that it’s even harder for insurgents to use government-makeup instability to present themselves as a solution.
Obviously though there isn’t yet a politically relevant left that can take advantage of that instability though, and for there to be one there would probably need to be a split in the democratic party to join with a jumbling of all the left-wing sects in the country, both of which seem unlikely to happen (and maybe the later isn’t actually needed aside from DSA), so the equivalent of what this musk party idea is for the right in that it splits the republicans, attracts some democrats and gathers independents around it.
Of course instability domestically can lead to something very ugly abroad but I don’t know how it could be any worse than it already is, or if it were how it would not be self-defeating for america
My understanding is that the particular nature of US electoralism is that mathematically, the system will always revert to two parties. In the past, new parties have supplanted old ones but situations where you have more than two parties is incredibly unstable and short-lived. Not to mention most of that “churn” occurred in the early days of the US. And the two party system is so robust that it maintains itself from the presidency all the way down to small town councils.
Yeah, but he might legalize dick dingers
Hmmm 🤔
Okay 🤷
