James Comey investigated over seashell photo branded ‘threat’ against Trump

Ex-FBI director deletes Instagram post of shells in ‘8647’ formation that Republicans claim is code for assassination

Trump’s supporters have interpreted the message as an endorsement of violence against Trump – the 47th president. There is more debate around the use of 86, a slang term often used in restaurants to mean getting rid of or throwing something out

Cool remember when musk openly, with words, in plain english, called for someone to assisinate biden and harris back in the summer and nothing happened?

I know it’s futile to point out the hypocrisy of people who only act in bad faith, but still…

Ok, this seems like a positive development… Rank & file feds will jump to defend Comey. Morale will drop and we’ll see leaks and other minor acts of rebellion against the Trump admin. This will trigger a reaction to remove “woke DEI” FBI agents which will basically gut the agency. This could happen.

A far more reasonable interpretation would that this simply means “dump Trump” ie: in the garbage, as you would expired food. Or in other words, get rid of him. Saying this implies murder is a huge stretch.

But, who am I to question the professional constantly-outraged victims.

    If they arrest him - it’s a double-edged sword.

Con: It means they can arrest anybody for saying anything.

    Pro: It’s fucking hilarious.

congrats to these great minds cracking that coded message.

I’m also a big Comey social media follower and my own deciphering attempts had been thwarted by the unshakeable belief that Comey was misremembering the lyrics to Tommy Tutone’s hit “867-5309 (Jenny)”

In the hospitality industry, it is used to indicate that an item is no longer available, traditionally from a food or drinks establishment, or referring to a person or people who are not welcome on the premises. Its etymology is unknown, but the term seems to have been coined in the 1920s or 1930s.

Military personnel might use “86” informally to refer to scrapping equipment (e.g., “That old radio got 86’d”) or ending a plan or mission (e.g., “The op was 86’d due to bad weather”). It’s not an official term in military doctrine or manuals, but it’s part of the informal jargon that soldiers, sailors, or airmen might pick up and use, influenced by broader civilian language.

Defending Comey isn’t really my bag. I just kinda wish anything meant anything. How cute is the coincidence that a bygone character of the civil soap opera is done in by his contemporary: alternative facts

If I am not mistaken the term “86” comes from the Great Depression. The big vats of soup that they would feed hungry people lining up with would typically produce 85 bowls so if you were the 86th person in line you were shit outta luck.

I always heard it was from a speakeasy in the west village called Chumleys. Its address was 86 Barrow Street. They would serve liquor in tea cups and each drink had a different “tea” code name. If the cops came for a raid they would shout “86 your tea cups” and everyone would throw their cups into the fireplace.

Comey was actually using numeric goroawase (Japanese wordplay) to send a message to his favorite Mario character

It seems absurd but every right wing politician is talking about it right now. If all of right wing media and politicians are talking about it. And DHS announced that they are investigating. Then it seems like a notable story despite being absurd.

Bonus absurdity. People are posting on twitter that May 15, 2025 is 8647 days after September 11, 2001.

It would be an intensely Comey thing to arrange objects into the shape of the number of days since 9/11 instead of making any sort of boomer political stand, so I think they should check his camera roll before they bring any charges.
