Because the government is giving them access to free groceries. So there are strings attached. If they don’t like those strings, they can refuse to accept the aide. No one is forcing them to accept food stamps. Than can turn them down if the don’t like it coming with rules.

AGain, like the article said, it’s that many don’t want our taxes going to people who waste it on soda and candy. Which aren’t healthy anyway. Those are treats, and people buy those as luxury. I’m not giving them money to buy treats, I’m giving them money to buy nutritional food.
YOU an give them money to buy treats. In fact, you can buy the treats and give it to them yourself. You’re free to do that.
If someone can get candy or soda for cheap, why should it matter if they decide to get that specific item?
