Using Mullvad on Linux Mint, I see a number of settings and have no idea what they are for. DAITA, Multihop, Local Network Sharing, API Access. I would like to keep Mullvad VPN on all the time, but still be able to use Freetube and Grayjay. Also not break too many websites, although that seems to be more of a Librewolf setting issue. Can anyone recommend settings for Mullvad that I should be using?
- DAITA adds noise to your traffic, in order to prrvent AI packet analysis. However, most people don’t need this, and it limits your server options as well as increasing your bandwidth usage. Leave it off unless you need it.
- Multihop routes your traffic through two Mullvad servers, in order to further obscure your IP address. Turn it on for added privacy, unless you have problems as a result.
- Local network sharing means you can still connect to devices on your home network while using Mullvad VPN. This includes things like networked printers, network attached storage, and the web interface on your router. Turn on unless you’re sure you don’t need it.
- API access just checks to make sure you can connect to Mullvad at all. The API is what gives you the list of servers and provides your computer with the connection info. Have a look if you’re interested, but you shouldn’t need to change anything.
- If you are on a hostile network, this part of the settings also lets you enable bridges, which can help to circumvent local VPN blocks.
On desktop, DAITA works on all tunnels. It multihops with the server that supports it as the entry and the server you select as the exit.

Mullvad servers have been targeted by YouTube. I’ve found consistent access with Freetube requires multi-hop using rented servers.
Use their SOCKS5 proxy. Haven,'t encountered any issues on Freetube since then.

Piggybacking on your post, if I disable my VPN on Linux Mint or lose connection for whatever reason, Mullvad REFUSES to reconnect until I reboot my PC. I’ve got the same setup on three different devices and its all the same. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong??
mullvads clients just seem bad. every time i wake my pc from sleep, cpu usage and temps go high for a good 20 seconds and the app is frozen. it constantly crashes in my phone too, and it wouldn’t work in UK at all for some reason. thinking lf switching to airvpn anyway because of portforwarding.
Its always worked fine for me on iOS, GrapheneOS, macOS, and Windows. For some reason tho, Mint is the only place I’ve had trouble with it. 🤷
weirdly your bug doesn’t occur on my pc, also mint. but i recall some setting causing my phone to not be able to reconnect, probably quantum-resistant tunnel. does it fix if you set that to automatic or off?
I have that set to automatic on my Grapheme device. Presumably my other devices too, but I don’t have access to those atm.
