Is it possible to understand the Universe without understanding the largest structures that reside in it? In principle, not likely.

      We call an atom a thing too.
      (And it’s just a bunch of things far apart.)

      As well as mountain ranges, which would be a good analogy of how this helps us understand the “local relief” (of the observable universe).
