I think it was established pretty early on that Ukraine being a failed state is, for all intents and purposes, a win for Russia. It’s preferable to them being a NATO member at least.
I guess my point is that I fail to see to much of a difference. A failed state can still be a NATO springboard (see: Libya). Even if this ends in some kind of treaty, how long until Moscow is back in the same spot again?
