I think it’s very funny that as a small child I was like the textbook example of autism and yet nobody suspected I was autistic, probably because I was not a boy lol. Just goes to show how gender interacts with the medical field I guess.

When I came out trans mine told me they had no idea… and well they never got asked if they suspected I was autistic either because I had disowned my family before realising myself, I know the answer they’d have given me tho

Same, I told my parents I suspect I am yesterday, expecting them to do the refrain of “you’re just too smart for everyone else” like they used to when i was young but …

        less relevant to the thread

They listened, and were surprisingly supportive. Now they think if I have it that I got it from my dad’s side since his brother and sister in retrospect are pretty classic cases and are really struggling, even at an advanced age.

The only criticism was that my mom thought it could be PTSD from an extremely young age (I was born with some birth defects that needed extensive surgery when I was young) and all I could do was shrug. I heard trauma from the first couple of years can lead to a form of acquired autism. I told her if that’s true the distinction is academic, and that I’m choosing to see it, if its true, as a positive thing, as its shaped who I am and given me so much (even if it has been difficult too).

Unmasking Autism has been such a good read, and I found the exercises really helpful.

When I was in high school, I had a friend ask. I think a lot of people just assumed I was. When I mentioned it to my mom, she was like “could you get more financial aid/scholarships if you get a diagnosis?” Idk about childhood.

Relatable, I’m clearly autistic. I was also made an example of for acting out because of sensory issues and such. I knew I wasn’t cis and acting out on that got similar results…
