I’ve always really liked Alex Garland’s films even with their vaguely dubious politics, but Civil War was impressively shallow and dull.
Especially considering he’d just made another movie with the structure of a group of people (with a heavy focus on female protagonists) venturing through increasingly dangerous and uncertain territory, Annihilation, in a quasi-warfare situation, in order to learn something about the world and themselves. And it was vastly superior.
Alex Garland has made multiple films with A24. Warfare, Civil War, Men, Annihilation, & Ex Machina (in order of newest to oldest).
This comment thread was talking about how poor Civil War was.
I was also pointing out that he’d previously made a far superior film with similar themes and structure when he made Annihilation, which really demonstrates just how poor Civil War is even by comparison to his own work on similar ideas.
(Also, in regard to your other comment, I have no idea what it is exactly that you “called”)
Thank you for an honest response! I’m a little too intoxicated to respond honestly, so I’ll respond in ernst tomorrow. Again, I’m sorry for asking too late.
Lol, seeing everyone else here express the exact opposite opinion. Then I checked the instance and realized where I was
Edit: the fact this is still positive gives me hope.
Yeah, coz it’s a bad movie with nothing to say except “Journalism, important?”
And don’t go starting on some tangent about how it’s an apolitical movie because that’s exactly why it’s bad
Just gray sludge dressed up in the guise of enlightened centrism

Called it!
I know it’s a strange question and a week late. But are you talking about A24’s film?
I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking, but…

Remember to drink plenty of water!
Thanks homie! I definitely needed that advice!
It’s setting also makes zero fucking sense. Total vibes based politics.
I stand by the fact that Marvels Civil War is the better Civil War Movie :^)
