Gnome’s development is also slow imo. I don’t follow the progress but it has to catch KDE feature wise.
545 will have better wayland support. For now X11 is a better choice i guess. (i don’t own an nvidia gpu)
My guess is your mesa driver was old so you didn’t have graphics pipeline library enabled by default. distros doesn’t differ but packages.
