Have been on Mastodon for a few years, was on kbin until it started flaking and then died, and in the last couple months have set up a Hubzilla instance and joined Friendica, Peertube, and Lemmy servers. Left FB in 2016, reddit during API fiasco, never really on any others, but absolutely don’t feel like I’m missing anything, the Fediverse is awesome and just keeps getting better.

Get a decent router with capability to be Wireguard server, and you can always have access to your services from anywhere, without exposing them. It’s really easy to set up, too.
