lerba@piefed.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•is Lemmy the most popular 'Reddit Alternative'?English3·1 day agoSubjectively speaking, after switching to Piefed I feel like “the internet is back”.
Engaging conversation, good tools for filtering the front page to your liking, and the audience seems generally speaking more mature. I do expect that to change if the platform grows in size.

In Germany cash is preferred in most places, and that makes tracking payments difficult. This is not the case in most other european countries. That’s an another anecdote for you.

lerba@piefed.socialto Russia@sopuli.xyz•Bargaining, acceptance, recession: Russian officials have lost their optimism and are now openly acknowledging that a recession is loomingEnglish3·3 days agoFor example, a provincial auto repair shop might have previously fixed three cars a week but officially reported only one; now it repairs just two cars, but payment for both is fully recorded in the statistics. The government can take pride in such signs of progress, but the wealth of the people under these conditions is not growing — it is declining.
When you’re working with data like that, all you can really do is speculate. We’ll know for sure only after a few decades I guess
lerba@piefed.socialto Chat@beehaw.org•the US as it existed its entire history is done. why aren’t Americans acting like it?English7·3 days agoThis sounds like a pretty good description of the situation.
I would add the seeming lack of true alternatives, as dems have repeatedly dropped the ball in the last few decades.

lerba@piefed.socialto Technology@lemmy.world•UK: X's design and policy choices created fertile ground for inflammatory, racist narratives targeting Muslims and migrants following Southport attackEnglish2·3 days agoGlad to hear I’m not alone with these thoughts!
I propose, as a counter movement, automatic engagement; Instead of “liking” or “upvoting”, leave a comment every time you see something you support. And try to abstain from commenting on ragebait or otherwise intentional attention seeking. If enough people start doing this, the algorithm should start adapting to prefering more substantial or positive material, right? I know it sounds naive, but worth a shot!

lerba@piefed.socialto World News@lemmy.world•Body of man missing for 28 years found in melting glacierEnglish31·4 days agoThere was a hint of a possible motive though: "He was travelling with his brother, Kathiruddin, on horseback on the day he went missing. Police said a family feud had forced the two men to leave their home. " But yeah, seems like a pretty plausible accident.
Oh, good to know! I will look at other options then
