When I make coffee just for myself, I always measure out the same amount of water and this never happens. But my SO is slightly less autistic about it than I am and makes inconsistent amounts when brewing for the two of us - and I just can’t stand the thought of pouring even a drop of coffee down the drain. So, I spill it on the table and floor instead.

The level of consciousness in something like a brain parasite or a slug is probably so dim that it barely feels like anything to be one. So even if you were reincarnated as one, you likely wouldn’t have much of a subjective experience of it. The only way to really experience a new life after reincarnation would be to come back as something with a complex enough mind to actually have a vivid sense of existence. Not that it matters much - it’s not like you’d remember any of your past lives anyway.

If reincarnation were real and I had to bet money on how it works, I’d put it down to something like the many‑worlds interpretation of quantum physics - where being “reborn as yourself” just means living out one of your alternate timelines in a parallel universe.

Moccamaster is relatively popular brand where I live. Most people know about it. It always boggles my mind when I see a middle class family with a 35€ coffee maker. Why cheap out on something you’re using multiple times a day for the rest of your life? These things are not that expensive and spare parts are widely available.

I mean, honestly this is one of the better uses for machine learning. Not that this age checking is a good thing but if you’re going to do it on a mass scale then this seems like the right approach. Just a few days ago I was in a discussion about misgendering people online, and a lemmy.world mod who was advocating against it didn’t like my theory about why some people do it. Their response was to attack me personally by intentionally misgendering me and calling me a “lady.”

I’m not sure what their reasoning was there, but the only way I can interpret it is that they see women as the lesser sex - so by implying I’m not a guy, they’re saying I’m lesser as well.

Is “AI slop” synonymous with AI content in general? I’ve always thought it to mean bad AI content specifically.

I don’t consider myself neurotypical yet I see our current AI progress as net-positive. I don’t like AI slop either in the sense that I understand the term but I’ve encountered a lot of good AI generated content.

The problem I’m dealing with right now is kind of a first world one in that I’m unable to ride my electric bicycle because the speed sensor is malfunctioning and the sensor from my other bike is incompatible as it’s a 4-pin one and the other bike uses a 3-pin one. I do have a 3rd bike too but it’s not fun to ride due to lack of electric assist.

Looking back, I realize I was pretty immature at 22. It didn’t feel that way at the time, but it sure does now. These days, 18‑year‑olds look like kids to me.

I didn’t want kids back then, and I still don’t - but my perspective has shifted a little. When I see parents now, there’s a slight melancholic feeling that comes with knowing that’s something I’ll probably never experience.

So yeah, if you’re 30 and don’t want kids, that’s probably not going to change. Before that, though, there’s always a chance.

Upon closer inspection, the chisel end seems to have a lower angle than the knife edge. It’s a relatively thick carbon steel blade, so I’m not worried about durability, and it should be easy to sharpen. I’ll probably just keep the chisel end sharp and leave the blade itself dull.

Seems better that they rather live within their own community with likeminded people that within the general population. Win-win.

Maybe so, but we already have an example of a generally intelligent system that outperforms our current AI models in its cognitive capabilities while using orders of magnitude less power and memory: the human brain. That alone suggests our current brute‑force approach probably won’t be the path a true AGI takes. It’s entirely conceivable that such a system improves through optimization - getting better while using less power, at least in the beginning.
