  • I think it’s important for men to understand that desirability is a fully internal feeling. The only person who can make you feel desirable is yourself, no amount of sexual partners will change how you feel. At the same time, of course, society does pit men against each other on the basis of how many different women they can have sex with. But that is still a comparison between men, women’s actual attraction does not ever play a role. They are simply being used as a metric of desirability.

In the real world people are attracted to so many things, there’s no need to sweat it. Try to do things for yourself that make you feel good. Buy some good clothes, work out, etc. Don’t do these things for women, do them for you. You are the only person you need to worry about finding you attractive.

  • I agree with Marx on this one. Religion is a reflection of materialist conditions. To that end, any group cultures is going to be, in some way, a reflection of materialist conditions. Therefore, Atheist talking as a group will be somewhat identical to religion.

For my honest beliefs, I will happily label myself as athiest; antithiest. Any “God” that treats it’s children this way is in no way worthy of worship. And I would rather believe that I was just very unlucky than to believe that a consciousness in the universe chose to curse me with the afflictions I face.

  • I’m working on a theory, that the rise of livestreaming and the erosion of rights, or at least sympathy, for the disabled are connected. You can decide what kind of -posting this is, but the disabled have historically been shunned to venues of less-than-repute entertainment to make a living. Carnival workers, ‘freak show’ members, etc. And live streaming is just the next venue to pop off. As more disabled people, who are unable to work a regular job, give streaming a chance (www.twitch.tv/myelint tomorrow at 1 p.m. est) the expectation that the disabled will be able to make a good amount of money just playing video games is reinforced in society and the idea that we may need assistance, especially financial, becomes less accepted.

But even for the successful, it’s just like working those older jobs. There is no advancement in the field of streaming, just as there was no advancement for working at a carnival. Even worse, creators on streaming platforms are not given the same workers’ protections as a regular job, beholden to the ‘gig economy’ style of employment where you can have your job snatched out from under you and you get no attempt to bargain your own pay. Then there is the fact that you have to be constantly performing and hope you don’t lose your audience.

  • The thing about historians saying that people were friends and not lovers is to avoid coming to conclusions without necessary evidence. Now, I’m sure there is a degree of homophobia, but historians aren’t from those cultures, so they can’t say for certain if a behavior was actually evident of homosexuality or if it is simply the lens of modern culture.

I have a funny story about this. In 1685, James II, a Catholic, came to the throne in England. The people, who were very protestant, let this happen with minimal rebellion because everyone thought he was gay. But in the 1600’s they didn’t really have a word for homosexuality, so the only thing that is clear from historical records is they were very sure he wasn’t going to have a kid during his reign (he already had a daughter). So my history professor professor explained it as they all thought he was nudge nudge you know. But when he did end up having a son, all hell broke loose and the people of England basically invited William of Orange to invade.

  • I have been kicking around a campaign idea where the BBEG is an evil wizard that has sucked all the evil out of the world to use for himself, so anything evil is instantly vaporized. Of course, the Wizard is evil and controlling, but it also upsets the natural order, so he must be stopped. Goblins are aligned neutral evil (As they often are) but along the way, the adventurers find a village of goblins who have learned to be good, but are under constant temptation do to bad things. So as the adventurers walk around the town, if they don’t stop a goblin from biting them or pick pocketing them, POOF, goblin gone.

Of course this leads to a meditation on good and evil, and what that really means. Also all of the goblins are named after military contractors.
