Reminds me of the joke about the man on a rooftop in a flood, who called out to god to save him, and refused help from a helicopter and a boat, saying that God would save him. When he died in the flood he asked god why he didn’t save him,and God replied ‘I sent you a helicopter and a boat, what more do you want?’

Very similar, actually.
