Up next on our electoral tour is Portugal. The current government - a coalition of the center-left Socialists and the center-right Social Democrats - has been mired in corruption scandals, resulting in a general election being called a mere two years after the last one. The fascist and vaguely populist Chega party has gained significant support over the last two years due to the economic hardships. Yesterday, the Social Democrats secured a narrow win of 79 seats compared to the Socialists’ 77. Chega, in third place at 48, would appear to be the best candidate for a coalition, though the leader of the Social Democrats has said that they would refuse a coalition with them due to their xenophobic views. Regardless, the fascist surge is worrying, if expected.
Portugal’s economy is going pretty badly even as European countries go, with little growth in productivity or investment over the last decade. The origins of this crisis date back to Portugal making the euro their national currency in the early 2000s, thus surrendering their ability to control their own currency, becoming reliant on investment from Germany and France, and suffering greatly in the 2012 European debt crisis. Unemployment and low wages spurred emigration; in 2013, the youth employment rate was about 40%; this has only come down to 25% recently and is increasing again. The government is heavily reliant on debt for public spending, with a debt-to-GDP ratio skyrocketing to over 100% in the two decades since the turn of the millennium. The capitalist sector is simply not profitable enough and hasn’t been for 40 years, which is only a problem if you are a capitalist economy. Inside Portugal is the same story playing out across much of Europe. A failing center or center-left political party, unable to cope with the economic troubles of the last few years due to absolute obedience to neoliberal policies. A fascist party rising, but with no alternative economic plan, hoping that perhaps oppressing minorities and going after “wokeism” will make their God, The Economy, rain blessings down on them again.

Their “support” of the Geringonça was also never “official”, as in they weren’t part of the government, it was a minority government that had to compromise to make whatever they wanted pass parliament, and since it was a center-left party in power, they preferred compromise with the left. It was also only done to avoid another mandate by the center-right party (PSD who had the most votes in the election) and their austerity in the prior years. They’re one of the most principled communist parties not in power and the major reason for their underperformance is precisely because unlike other reformist parties they’ve maintained their anti-EU stance and their opposition to Ukraine and support of countries like the DPRK and Cuba. Even the word Geringonça itself means something like “contraption”, as in something that could break at any time.
Very unserious, the party has been completely in opposition since 2022, also in my experience most voters supported the budget approval negotiations (the communists were never in government) that characterized the 2015-2019 period and stated that as their reason to support us even if, in total, the PS got the most electoral gain out of it.
If you had to do a simplistic “basically” it would be “basically don’t be anti-nato during a nato-russia war” which is what we did, obviously that’s out of the question though. Every party except us supports arms shipments to ukraine
You can’t imagine how hard it has been to try and get the party to grow or just gather allies when tons of people sincerely believe that we support russia, so losing 30k votes and 1% of vote share isn’t surprising. We’ve always been shunned by the media and had to go directly to people in workplaces and such but this is always hanging over our heads
Been too depressed to post about the elections here but with takes like these I had to.
This all isn’t to say that the idea that the party shouldn’t have taken that position in 2015 is out of the question, plenty of my comrades take it, just that there’s a lot of context lacking here is what I’m saying.
The Russian people supported entering WWI at first. Throughout the war, the Bolsheviks maintained their anti-war position and even though it may have been unpopular at first and brought official persecution on them, in the end that principled stand helped fuel the revolution as the fate of the war turned against Russia and the people wanted out of it.
NATO and Ukraine will not win this war, there are zero paths to victory. It’s over. Only way to avoid Ukraine capitulating is for NATO to get directly involved and that’s not a “win” for anyone, that’s WW3. Putin I have no doubt will ensure that it’s abundantly clear who won in any peace terms. So when that happens, and NATO can’t hide their shame or the fact that they got all those people murderered and pissed away tens of billions of dollars… I think the political situation in Europe will completely flip. The parties that opposed war will benefit as people will try and do what Americans did with Iraq (pretend they were against it all along). Unfortunately, for much of Europe this means the far right will benefit since the left parties in places like Germany were all on board with pushing for war.
Yeah I know but until then it’s gonna suck for people who take this position publically, that’s why it sucks that we even had election this year when they were only set for 2026.
