I’m not sure this is a good idea. Surely this sort of messaging is better aimed at independants / floating voters? You’d think that any republicans who see this are going to go straight into “REEEEE DEMONCRATS SEE WHAT THEY DO THEY KILL BABIES REEEEE” mode and dig deeper into their mindset.

Eh—everyone already knows where Biden stands on abortion. Avoiding the issue suggests that he’s embarrassed or ashamed of his position—it concedes the moral high ground to the Republicans.

Lots of voters prefer a confident candidate to one who agrees with them on everything.

I think it’s aimed at swing voters—the kind who voted for both Obama and Trump.

They’re generally lukewarm on the issues, but are attracted to candidates who seem self-assured and confident. The candidates in the debate are likely to be anything but, given their fear of saying anything that might anger Trump’s core voters—so this ad will give viewers an obvious contrast.

Well whatever the intent; I hope it works as intended. We’re having a similar moment here (UK) where we have a reasonable opposition to the godawful conservative party, he’s objectively a better choice yet people on the far left are convinced he’s the devil and go around convincing people not to vote for him. Whereas the reality is, he has to walk a tightrope fighting media bias and can’t be the Ultra Woke Leftie Warrior they want him to be.

Currently polling at 50% vs 25% though, so I have a small sliver of hope that things will change next year.

The ad is designed to keep the abortion issue talked about. Have you noticed how Republicans have gone radio-silent on abortion? They don’t want it brought up. This is a smart move.

Ding. The SCOTUS ruling is wildly unpopular. Republicans literally just took one of their cornerstone issues – abortion – and said, “Nah, we’re done with this,” and handed it to the Democrats to use in elections for several cycles.

“We know we’ve spent decades harping on abortion but you need to stop thinking about it now. Oooh look over there shiny!” That’s why these ads are being run and I agree it’s a good idea. Maybe some additional ads that are like white trailer park looking people talking about how an abortion saved their life or how their baby was stillborn so they had an “abortion” and how traumatic it was and how much more traumatic it would have been to have to carry to term.

They are the dog that caught the car. I remember some maga mom being absolutely enraged when the abortion thing leaked out from the corrupted too-conservative court. My wife asked her…but WHY are you so angry that they are going to overturn Roe? Isn’t that what you want?

This woman screwed up her face and screamed that liberals were going to use it against Republicans. Yeah, no kidding. But it’s what you guys WANTED. For about 50 years. WTAF.

This is the one group that seems perpetually pissed off about everything, all the time, even getting things they wanted and asked for, like tearing up the rights of women, and naming a special counsel for Hunter Biden…who can maintain that level of rage all the time? It cannot be good for your health.

This is so true! One thing I’ve always loved about American liberal culture (yeah, I know; we’re not really liberal here) is that we laugh at our mistakes. For most of my life, Cable and Late Night comedy shows have been helping us find the humor in the things we would otherwise be enraged about. I feel like it has helped me stay sane all these years. I kind of feel bad for the Fox News-watching conservatives who spend their days oscillating from outrage to fear to outrage again. It must be hell on their cardiovascular health.

The ad isn’t aimed to convert anyone, it’s meant to feed into the social media narrative. Entrenched Republicans aren’t changing their vote, but it could spark interest in younger voters who don’t go to Fox News but read about the campaign.

It’s definitely a good idea. The left has been failing to mock the right for far too long. The only thing that will really stop that movement is if it’s cringey and an embarrassment to be a part of it. It also shows their attacks and strategies as weaks., since dark Brandon started as a rightwing meme.

There are plenty of radical centrists who will watch this shit because they feel obligated to hear out fascists just in case one of them actually manages to form a cogent thought.

These are the goldfish voters. If they do not have their knowledge and beliefs reaffirmed every 27 seconds, they revert to a blank political slate. The GOP has figured it out - these people are the reason why “bumper sticker politics” is so effective. The goldfish phenomenon perfectly explains every paradox and confounding effect in the history of political odds-making - that there is a shockingly large contingent of voters out there whose entire political identity is effectively defined by the most recent political message they attentively received.

I was like 50/50 on voting for Biden before i saw this. Even though this ad is definetly not ideated by Biden (for sure just a campaign manager or a 20 year old intern), standing up for abortion rights front and center on fox will likely make it more so like an 80/20 if I actually like the outcome of it. Will probably be one of the more memorable things from his career for me.

That’s because the origin isn’t “autistic screeching”. It’s the screaming frog. The connection to “autistic screeching” was a later misassociation popularized on Reddit.

Tbh that’s not even the issue I have.

Ignoring the whole “being offended for people who likely don’t appreciate someone being offended on their behalf” part, how does one expect to gain acceptance of their ideas by being an absolute dickhead to them?

Even if you have the greatest idea of all time, telling someone to implement it and then calling them a piece of shit leaves people very disinclined to implement anything they’ve said. They’ll be stuck on ‘man that person was a real asshole. Fuck them and whatever bullshit they were talking about’

As for the part we’ve ignored, I honestly thought we were done with that whole thing? That we moved on to actually trying to help people rather than virtual signal about helping? FFS

Let me ask you, have you actually met anyone differently abled who explicitly asked you “I wish you’d be offended on my behalf to random people?”

I’m kinda doubting you have mostly because the last couple of times I’ve seen virtual signalling like this, the groups involved found it demeaning, insulting and harmful. https://www.forbes.com/sites/susanharmeling/2023/01/16/virtue-signaling-on-race-relations-only-hurts-the-cause/

If you actually want to help people, then have you considered donating to charities for those causes? If you’re low on funds, that’s fine, you can volunteer time to help out. The charity runners would really appreciate it and it would go so much farther than this faux moral outrage tactic.

It means alot more to me when a person who would actually get offended by something asks that people not say said offensive thing (in a personal setting, work is work) than a person who would not get offended.

For instance, I’m a Jew and I ask people not to call me white because I’m Jewish, not white. Seems reasonable a Jew asking people not do to a thing that’s offensive to Jews.

But if I were white and asked people “hey don’t call Jews white” well who the fuck am I to be asking that? I’m not a Jew (impacted person) nor have I identified myself to have any authority in the matter. I’m just a dude doing a thing.

To add to that we have the second problem. How the person went about it. They were an asshole in their request. You don’t win over hearts and minds by being a dick, no matter how much of a dick those hearts and minds were.

Said person decided to double down on being a dick leaving me entirely uninterested in enacting any changes they’ve requested. So from my perspective

                    • the person is virtual signalling which is shown in the article I linked, has historically proven to not have a positive impact.
                    • the person is being an asshole

Why should I care about their opinion?

Yours on the other hand, was in a respectful of upset manner and is coming from an impacted individual. You carry weight and you’ve been respectful in doing so.

I’m hopeful I’ve shown you the same respect in my response.

It’s the “…being a jerk” part that is, initially, unnecessary. If they aren’t informed, there is no intent. If they don’t respond well to the initial raw/basic info, that’s a different conversation.

Where did you draw the connection that “reee” has anything to do with autism? Like most things in reality outside of TikTok, It has absolutely nothing to do with autism. Nobody has to change their behavior simply because someone misinterprets something. If it is genuinely punching down, then sure I get it, but this isn’t an example of that. It’s just a screeching angry frog sound meant to depict people overreacting about anything.

Do better? You need to know your memes better.

        https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/reeeeeee

REEEEEEE" is an onomatopoeic expression of intense rage or frustration typically associated with the Angry Pepe character and used by those who frequent the /r9k/ board on 4chan. The expression is often associated with the Autistic Screeching meme, however it is intended to represent the unique croak produced by several species of frogs when agitated.
