    “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” (emphasis added)

    I don’t think they really “found a way” around it insomuch as they explicitly continued to allow it in the text of the 13th Amendment. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!
