    The researchers found that about 5,000 years ago, during the early stages of horse domestication, selective breeding favored a genetic region (or locus) associated with the ZDPM1 gene. This gene is a known behavior modulator in mice, suggesting that taming was one of the earliest steps toward the domestication of horses.
