With great fanfare earlier this month, the pioneering artificial intelligence company OpenAI unveiled its latest model, GPT-5, an AI system so advanced that using it was said to be like conversing with a Ph.d. It landed with a unsettling thud.

They don’t make profit. They keep getting more and more venture capital money because of the hype, but they aren’t making a profit.
That’s the fun part of all this. Somehow most people think these AI companies are making money hand over fist.
They’re burning money at such a rate that it’s actually alarming to behold.
and electricity. and water.
the water is the worst part.
leon is using aquifer drinking water from under memphis to cool grok. he promised to build a grey water plant, but alas, he’s too rich to have to keep promises…hasn’t even broken ground on it.
please do not use grok.
Well that’s fucking horrific. Like I needed another reason to hate the nazi piss baby, thanks for the intel :)
Honestly, it’s more a religion than an investment at this point. We have a generation of aging tech leaders. They grew up on science fiction, and many of them hoped that advancements in biology and genetics would enable dramatic extensions of human lifespans. They put a lot of hope into the scenario that aging would be cured within their lifetimes. You think someone like Elon Musk has made peace with his own mortality? Not a chance in Hell.
So you have these tech billionaires in their forties, fifties, and sixties. And for them it’s quickly becoming apparent that even if we’re someday able to advance biology enough to significantly extend lifespans, that this is unlikely to be done in time for them. Maybe their children or grandchildren will get to live for centuries, but they’re going to die just like all the schmucks that came before them. And they simply cannot accept this.
This is why they are putting so much hype, money, and hope into AI. Summoning a digital god really is the only hope that these tech billionaires have at extending their lives. We’re making great progress in many areas of biology, but we are extremely unlikely to make substantial progress in fighting aging in time for people who are already in their late fifties or sixties. It’s just too big of a problem. But if these tech billionaires can manage to create and control superintelligent AI? That’s really the only shot we have of curing aging within the next few decades. There is just no way regular human science is going to pull something like that off so quickly.
These tech billionaires don’t tend to be the religious type. They don’t believe in an afterlife waiting for them. AI represents to them the only chance they’re going to get at immortality. And these are people that fundamentally see themselves as apart and better from the rest of humanity. They simply cannot accept that they’re going to age and die just like the rest of us. So they’ve poured their fortunes into the one chance they have of clinical immorality. And they’re forcing AI into absolutely everything they can. They need as much money as possible flowing into the sector if they want to maximize their chances to create an AI that can save them from aging. They’re funding AI for the oldest reason in the book. They want to live forever.
In such a wall of text I am missing how exactly AI is connected to immortality
I envision something like this.
Simple. The AI will build something that makes you immortal.
Yeah, I like what they’re putting down, but I don’t understand the AI = immortality bit.
I thought either; the AI is going to help research a biological immortality solution, or; the AI is going to be an immortal avatar for these dickbags.
It’s four short paragraphs. And you can read between the lines. Perhaps you’ve been using AI too much? 😁
Anyway, it’s pretty obvious. Human biologists aren’t going to crack immortality in time for Musk or Thiel. So they’ve put all their hopes in the Singularity. They want to create superhuman intelligence that is better than humans at everything - including making new AIs and medical discoveries. The whole idea of the Singularity is that we have an intelligence explosion that, in a relatively short order, completely transforms human science and technology, advancing us by millennia over the course of a decade. And that kind of explosive advancement in biology really is the only chance that anyone already middle age or older, or perhaps even anyone currently alive, will live to see radical life extension.
There’s nothing in the laws of physics, the only real hard laws, that prevents us from curing aging. It’s just a really, really hard science and engineering problem. Biology is complicated. And to change something as fundamental as lifespan? It’s likely to take us centuries to make meaningful progress on it. But if you build millions of artificial minds, each with an intellect that makes Einstein look like a moron? That’s the kind of research team that might be able to crack the aging problem. Or at least, that’s what the tech billionaires are putting their faith in.
100% this is it. This is also why they joined the party of projection. They have become the old out of touch individuals clutching so tightly to their idealized dreams, that they are willing to make actual progress come to a screeching halt bc they can’t accept the reality that if those dreams ever happen, they won’t get to benefit
What do you do when you have way too much money and power, and you can’t accept reality? You try to buy and control reality no matter the cost.
That saying comes to mind about great people planting trees despite knowing they will never get to experience their shade. These are not great people, and they should not be in positions of power and leadership. Given the choice, they would choose destruction of the future rather than helping to build a future if they won’t directly benefit.
Is a scenario where humanity no longer exists, and eventually they’re just an brain in a vat floating through empty space until eventually even that smashes into a rock or gets sucked into a black hole somehow more desirable than the immortality achieved when your name and your contributions to humanity live on for sometimes hundreds or even thousands of years after your body dies?
I don’t know if their level of thinking is so shallow that they can’t even stop and really reflect on that reality for five fucking seconds, or if they’ve actually thought about it and determined that the brain in a vat scenario is the more acceptable outcome from their perspective. If that’s the case, to quote a Lemmy user on an article about Peter Thiel and transhumanism “I hope we’re alone in the universe.” Or at least, I hope that a black hole turns Peter Thiel into spaghetti before he can float into another society and cause their inevitable destruction, and I really hope he remains fully aware of what’s happening at the end.
