I just managed to capture this guy (or gal) over Spruce Knob Lake. This is at the full 400mm my lens is capable of and that’s all I got.
Here’s a crop. I think this is a young bald eagle, but I’m no expert. I base this on the location as well as how it was going after fish in the lake. Unsuccessfully, as it happens. After this dive and coming up with empty talons, it flew off and hid in the trees on the far side of the lake, presumably in a sulk.
Edit: It seems we think this is an osprey. I’ve looked at some pictures online and I believe that’s so. Pandion haliaetus carolinensis if what I’ve been reading is correct.
Osprey have a bit of a kink, or slightly bent wing.
Looks like an osprey!
Nice Osprey. They are very common where I live but I still get excited every time I spot one.
Osprey, maybe even right before diving!
Second for osprey, they have bald eagle-like coloring, but the white under the wings is an osprey giveaway.
And white feet, too. I hadn’t thought of the osprey angle, to be honest, since I didn’t know those were around the area. But that certainly seems to be the consensus!
Did it hover at any point? Other than it looking like an osprey, hovering would be the giveaway.
Very briefly, which is what it’s doing in this very photo. It stalled over the water for about one wing flap before diving and coming up with nothing.
Penguin (above the osprey)
George.
Damn I was gonna say Charlie. but he does look more like a George.
Yeah I’d agree it’s an Osprey. Crop the trees out at the bottom, keep the bird dead centre and
nudge the exposure and contrast very slightly andyou’ve got a cracking shot!Edit: had the brightness turned down on my phone 🤦🏻♂️
Seahawks.
