The surprise announcement comes one day after Tillis opposed a massive bill for Trump’s agenda in the Senate.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., announced Sunday that he would not run for re-election, one day after he drew Donald Trump’s ire for opposing the party’s sweeping domestic policy package.

The surprise decision opens up seat in battleground North Carolina that was already set to be one of the most hotly contested races of the 2026 midterms.

Republicans are now forced to scramble to find a replacement for Tillis in a race that is a top target for Democrats in next year’s midterms.

Another example that loyalty only flows one way when it comes to Donald Trump, and he will gladly have you excommunicated the nanosecond you become inconvenient or dare to criticize him in any way.

Yet nobody in the party will learn a damn thing, and about a million or so people who somehow still think that they’ll be somehow immune from the same treatment are already lining up to take Tillis’ place.

Seriously. Rudy Giuliani. Mike Lindell. Liz Cheney. Michael Cohen. Prominent, life-long Republicans who dedicated their lives, their fortunes, and their careers, and they’ve all ended up ruined, disgraced, and discarded. And that doesn’t count the literal dozens of prominent Republicans that have been forced out of politics because they didn’t suck up to Trump hard enough or voted against him that one time. How can you see a literal cemetery of people that have been sacrificed at the altar of Trump and say to yourself “Yes, I’d like to be the next in line.” How do you not see all of that and think that somehow, you’re the one who’s going to magically be immune? I just don’t get it.

Per the article it appears that Lara Trump is considering a run for the seat. That said, NC is a bit purple, and it isn’t clear that a MAGA Republican would win.

While it has been on the fence, it broke pretty hard for Trump even as Democrats won the governor, lt governor, and AG…

They might not be fully onboard with generic Republican but they are all in on MAGA… A Trump would probably give them a strong win.

So I’ve seen a fair number of people claim that Trump outperforming downballot is a sign of some cheating.

Question I have in response is why would the GOP bother to only cheat in the presidential election? Seems like if they were going to go all in on cheating, they’d rig it more soundly in their favor. Maybe they would have let Robinson take a dive because of his particular circumstances, but they would have assured themselves at least a supermajority in the state legislature to compensate.

It seems a simpler explanation is that people didn’t vote Republican, they voted “Trump”. Or also plausible that some of them didn’t vote “Trump” so much as they voted “not the woman of color with a foreign sounding name”.
