At no point do I imply that is the correct course of action, but it’s also not helpful to constantly berate actual acts of resistance all the damn time pretending that it’s from the moral high ground when you know damn well the line between the two is just a matter of privilege.
I hate to say it, but what about the optics on that (going up and burning the maga flags)?
It escalates things - bad
It gives them ammo - bad
It’s a threat they may not be used to - good
Empowers us - good
It is deliberate resistance, and leadership in that way through example - good
It’s kinda petty - bad
It’s funny as hell - good
I’m just not sure it’s worth it. I think the public moral high ground is the way to be, with the more terroristic methods occurring but being disavowed by the movement. That way you get to have your cake and eat it, too. And since there will always be those who choose violence and stuff, situational strategy awareness per-action seems highly relevant.
Basically, nuance is important and in this isolated situation I think moral high ground supports the main, already empowered and successful protest, and has a high risk, low reward.
In this situation, it’s not worth it, leave the loser alone in their push of shame. Maybe even feel good that you could’ve done it, but were even smarter AND BETTER than the magas and didn’t because you know it was wrong. Joking about it is also fine, but I think a better goal is to start working on seeing things in a more complete perspective, and promoting that nuance and bigger-picture consideration in others, too.
We will/should never be without our own personal feelings and situations, but right now, we are in an actually really important time, and are forced to think before action in order to seek success. Like the difference between driving recklessly and driving quickly - maximize efficiency and efficacy. We must win.
