Current Russia is about as far from communism, socialism or any left-wing agenda as possible. It is a reactionist, authoritarian, pro-tradition anti-progress state run by a wealthy elite. Being against current Russia has literally nothing to do with McCarthyism, other than geography.

Attacking all of your political enemies by claiming that they’re secretly Russian agents, and then accusing anyone who asks you for evidence of also being Russian agents is very much in line with the ring McCarthy has to in in left and liberal circles.
