I threw spotify in the trash 5 or more years ago and never looked back. Every day since I’ve been so so happy that I moved back to having everything local/available through personal networking.
My problem is both discovery of new stuff, and just having so many bits and pieces of things I want for certain moods. I’ve swapped from Spotify to apple, with Bandcamp for some stuff.
Yea, finding new stuff can still be tricky. I usually learn about new stuff through word of mouth, but I agree external services are useful for that.
Well yeah. They grow margin by reducing costs and maintaining subscription revenue. This comes at the expense of the musicians that create value for their subscribers and undermines the value of the subscription. Enshitification 101.
It’s still better than iTunes or Tidal or pirating all your music. I’m sure that will change someday but for now Spotify is the best music platform around.
Edit: you guys may not appreciate their treatment of artists but you know it’s better than those other options from a user experience perspective, and that’s all most people care about.
I straight up disagree with this. I recently (okay, six months now…) started using Tidal alongside Spotify, and literally think the shuffle algorithm is better than Spotify’s. The recommendation system took some getting used to, but I think it’s on par. Just different.
Honestly, my experience with Tidal reminds me of my experience with Vinyl: focus on albums and artist, not algorithmically generated playlists. I feel like I’ve become a better listener due to that, which is why I finally cancelled my Spotify subscription. I’m also sick of shitty mp3 compression…
Spotify has a “shuffle” option that includes recommended songs. This setting frequently gets stuck on - yesterday I was fighting with it for 5 minutes, then ended up giving up and switching to local music because it wouldn’t let me turn it off. I even pointed out to my wife what absolute horseshit this is. Basically, even if you pay them Spotify is going to try to fuck you over.
Side note, I have a months old extremely one-sided email chain with Spotify support in which I send them all the obvious unlicenced bootlegs that they jam into my release radar… they told me to keep sending them examples, then stopped responding. Note that there is no way to report songs in the app, or via their reporting system.
If you follow any dead rappers (or Lil Wayne), you definitely know the bootlegs I mean. I know I’m wasting my time but I can’t pass up the chance to tell them they are useless fucking assholes once a week.
I get mad at people who have Spotify still, especially cos I see royalty payments and want to scream when I see payouts from Spotify
I’m Happy to finally cancel my premium at the end of this month (gotta get my moneys worth). I’ve been building up my personal library and its gotten big enough to make me feel confident in swapping from streaming
Uch… greed really is ruining everything
ya of course they are, big biz 101
i am fine with that. the real discussion should be about how entitled everyone is. “i listen to music, so it is art”. duh…no. it can be art but hardly ever is. there is no art from kid rock or taylor swift. but nowadays thats dangerous to just mention. everyone either knows best already or wants a simple and quick answer while being a total failure at basics tasks like disinguishing art from slob. i’d even go further: a majority of people doesnt now how to shower. write down how you think you should shower…where to apply your shower gel…and THEN look up the manual from the WHO. if people like eating dirt, let them eat dirt but lets also call them out for being disgusting like a spotifyuser. no one who signed up for spotify premium did that in the interest of the artist but because you’re a lazy fuck and want it easy.
Stop trying to gatekeep art
stop shittinf yourself. spotify is just telling you to eat dirt. dont blame your stupidity on others.
See a doctor.
thats what the maga voters say until the day they wake up
