An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. To avoid this outcome and keep Lemmy growing, I ask you to please make a recurring donation:
Liberapay | Ko-fi | Patreon | OpenCollective | Crypto
If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name “Luigi”.
Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.
Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can’t go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Please use the link below to see current donation stats and make your contribution! We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.
Wait, why are we encouraging donating to a transphobe (nutomic) that we banned lmao
Like seriously, take this down, cancel all your donations to their team, and send them to trans people in the mutual aid comm
Edit: wait, why the fuck did that loser get unbanned?
A transphobe who defended (and posted in) an anti-vax community during the early years of lemmy.ml (when COVID was still being taken seriously by governments), defended “free speech” and the importance of not censoring the admin of the exploding-heads (pure fash) instance, unilaterally unbanned that same admin after exploding-heads was defederated because he contributed to code and that means overlooking running a fash instance, and more recently defended some weird pedo-adjacent mod again on the grounds of free speech.
Legitimately couldn’t care less that this goober might need to get a real job, no website is worth paying his bills for him.
And is continuing to act like “oh yeah sorry didn’t realize the transgender topic was so controversial, guess I’ll be more secretive with my transphobia next time” in the main thread on Lemmy. Absolutely vile person, and I think less of anyone that supports him financially or otherwise
Genuinely sad that nutomic is a transphobe, what fucking bullshit of “socialism wouldn’t have trans people” makes any sense to them?
I think it’s a dumb position, but my guess is it’s the whole (and let me repeat, ignorant) idea that the gender binary and therefore it’s contradictions and a valid need to transgress it are caused [primarily] by capitalism.
Thinking dysphoria would go away if we abolished capitalism is wild and idk how anyone can defend that position. Always strikes me as someone who was transphobic before becoming a commie and doesn’t want to change that position for some reason.

when banned admin/mod actions are not federated
I wonder what purelib faces will be when they realize that people spend their salaries on things and they’re probably financing communism just like Comrade Alex Jones.
Holy shit that crank is actually been funding the zapatistas for 14 years because of treats
Love how the reddit.welt and shit.sucks swine are bragging about how they think their “boycott and blockade” is working so good it’s killing lemmy. Tom and Jerry fucking behavior from the most brilliant people on the federated websites
They somehow house the contradictory stance of wanting a federated platform but also wanting everyone to conform to their views.
If only there was a place they could go back to that conforms to their views. Somewhere they can read it every day.
If only…
Saw you trying to talk some sense elsewhere. Holy shit lmao.
If other devs were willing and able to do the tedious work of managing and developing a project they would. des and nutty are maintaining lemmy because nobody else wants to, not because they’re sending commisars round to shut down any forks.
Using lemmy while wanting it to become an unmaintained mess is… something.
Yep. I do agree on those calling out Nutomic for their transphobia, but all the red scare nonsense is endlessly silly. Liberals would rather shut the whole project down than use free software made by Communists.
I think Nutomic sucks, I also think he’s doing useful work and has material needs lol.
If someone wants to take over and were a cooler person I’d support that but like sheesh. Do these chucklefucks apply the same rules to the rest of their lives? I pay my electricity company which is owned by horrifying oligarchic ghouls for power, I buy food at a grocery store run by corporate monsters I think should be shot in the town square. I have Christmas meals with my neighbours who maintain the primary school garden for the kids and are also landlords.
This is life, it is messy.
I somewhat agree, but I think it’s good to get Nutomic to reconsider their stances regarding the trans community.
pls defund the core devs building our platform
I wonder how that purity idealism will work out for them.
If I was one of the code monkeys I’d preemptively defederate as a last resort their entire lemmies from the rest of the federation (individually so they’re also disconnected from each other) and wave them off into the sunset.
Either that or permanently add a “go back to reddit” banner at the top of their homepage.
Would the existing codebase support that without requiring their admins to update? Surely they could always not update or fork like Hexbear does sometimes, right?
No, that isn’t a practical reality with the way the system works. The devs aren’t really that vindictive anyway
Yeah thank goodness they’re not a vindictive petty bitch like me
Lol it would be better for the drama, though
Programing my own captcha to force the libs to put the poop on the pig balls so they can log in every time
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Where are the champagne socialists when you need them? Us beer socialists can’t carry this on our own.
I’m being silly, please don’t roast me.
Anyways, I’ve donated, it’s not a lot, but it is what I can spare while being on social security disability.
I’m more of a Gin & Tonic Socialist. Patreoned our ML devs.
Are rum and coke socialists welcome?
Gabriel Garcia Marquez has some stories about how much Castro fkn hated losing even in minor things. Really comes through in this pic.
Look I mean think he has an undefedted record aganst the CIA
It’s so staggering that this relatively small group took on tha most powerful and evil empire in world history, with nearly unlimited resources and weaponry and won.
Truly one of the brightest moments in human history.
Omg you’re them. Sign my forehead.
But seriously, thanks for all the work you and your team put in to this project. I think it gives people a lot of comfort and a sense of community.
Just dropped some of my old bitcoin. They have a monero address… I keep thinking about monero. Really want to find a way to create a mining system that isn’t going to hit my electric bill. I had this thought of trying to rig something up in my car lol.
Probably would be more expensive hitting your gas bill, wouldn’t it?
Idk, it would draw from the battery, which is being recharged by the alternator. It would only run while the car is on (which is probably a issue but I have no idea how mining works exactly). I doubt it would subtract much to my mpg, I’m not sure that’s how the calculation works honestly.
Or I could try the solar rout. I all I know is that its never cost effective to mine off the grid. I’m not looking to “make money” it’s more of the challenge of getting around or minimizing the limitation.
I’ve considered building a cluster that I can keep plugged in under my desk at work, which has solar, and has net energy output in the summer.
I’m thinking from a “conservation of energy” end you’ll have your alternator running more to keep the battery topped off. Theoretically you could calculate the amount of gas you’d need and get the cost, but ICEs aren’t particularly efficient.
Other option would be harvesting “waste energy” line engine heat or exhaust pressure, but that’s complex and inefficient as well.
I think the mini hydro projects I see on YouTube are pretty neat, if you know someone who will let you dam their creek lol.
Hydro is a cool idea! But yeah, I think you’re right about the whole “conservation of energy” point.
join Dessalines as a patron!
I’ve been giving money since 2021
Do they live in Paris or something? 1k euro is so much money
idk what you’re on about, 1k euro is barely enough money in the fucking balkans
In Australia a 2 room house with an outside toilet would be ~1600 euro a month within a 40 minute commute to work in the city via walking and PT if in a walkable part.
Realestate hoarding is the bane of rich societies. Parasites feeding on all of us.
The average rent for an apartment in the U.S. is around (averaged) $1,800 nation-wide.
What the fuck is wrong with america?
“What the fuck isn’t wrong with america?” would be an easier question to answer.
um … um … we still have in most places a level of O2 that is breathable?
