When deportees fear for their lives so much they signal distress with a giant SOS sign, that’s the sign of a robust democracy.

I guess they’ll be allowed out in the courtyard one by one from now on…

This is disheartening news, but I had trouble watching the vertical video on a computer screen without cutting off the top or bottom of it.

Why are drone videos being shot in portrait? Are vertical videos officially the default now?

I understand vertical videos being made if someone’s holding their phone in their hand, but for a drone video it doesn’t make sense. Landscape orientation would work better as a default, since it’s easier to view on more devices - I can’t turn my computer monitor 90 degrees the way I can simply turn my phone.

Am I already too old and out of touch? Is there some psychological game to this that I’m missing?

I pointed out to my wife when we were watching YouTube on our TV something like this. She said it didn’t bother her until I pointed it out and now she hates it too.

We were watching a video that had originally been shot horizontal. But it had been edited to be displayed in YouTube short TikTok vertical form. So it was cut off on the sides and had that blurry copy of the video added to the top and bottom of it.

So, we’re sitting on the couch watching a video on a 55" tv and maybe 10" of that is the actual video.

This comment section seems like the wrong place to complain about this but I do feel your frustration. Sometimes I feel like technology is going backwards in a lot of areas. AI slop in search engines being the worst one right now.

I agree that a discussion about this is best held elsewhere. I was worried about commenting about it here because of the risk of detracting from the important topic at hand. But since it was a video in this post’s link that bothered me, it didn’t make sense to me to make a separate thread about this minor observation.

So, I fully expect to get downvoted for this, but I don’t know if this is as big a deal as people want to believe.

Is this really a sign of absolute desperation? Is this something they would only do in the most dire of circumstances?

The prisoners are probably bored. They probably are aware that a lot of people sympathize with them. They probably suspect they won’t be severely punished for making an SOS shape. So, it’s something to do to keep drawing attention to what’s happening.

I suspect the reason you don’t see this at normal prisons is that the prisoners know they would be punished if they did it, they know people don’t generally sympathize with them, and (most importantly) it’s probably much riskier to try to get a drone flying over a prison taking videos.

I’m not saying that they’re not suffering, or that their deportation is just. Clearly Trump is breaking the law and violating due process. And, by all accounts, the conditions in the detention centres are pretty unpleasant. My only point is that this may be more “this sucks, this is unfair, help us!” vs. “they’re torturing and murdering us, do something now or we’ll die!”

So your theory is that those illegally-abducted detainees, who know they’re one flight away from landing in a Salvadorian concentration camp without having seen a judge, are bored attention whores who think they can get away with staging a little dramatic show in the courtyard?

No, I never said anything about “bored attention whores”.

What’s your theory? That if they’re caught doing this they’re going to be executed?
