    Terrible precedent. Appointing the governor’s interest to a US senate seat potentially creates an undue advantage in power and popularity for the appointee in the subsequent special election, effectively allowing the governor to put their thumb on the scale of special senate elections (Rep Bonham makes this same point in the article).

    The norm in most other functioning states is to just hold the special election sooner. If we really feel the need to have zero days with a seat unfilled, the senators should name a deputy for themselves, as they’re the ones that the people elected to that seat.
