I was looking to add a small walk around camera to my kit. I have an om-d e-m5 ii right now and a few m43 lenses. I’ve been really happy with that, but I want something a little more slim and with a flip up screen (as opposed to flip out screen). IBIS is a must have for me. Other than that, I’ve just been looking to not spend a ton.
So in that vein I’ve been looking at used m43 cameras in the less than $400usd range (preferably less than 200, but I’m considering more to add features). Ones that have gotten my attention have been:
- lumix gx7
- lumix gx80/85
- olympus e-pl6 (and successors)
- olympus e-p5
- exciting mystery option (your suggestion goes here)
I’m mostly wondering if people have used these and have any experience or advice on which is best. If there are other things to consider I don’t know about that would be helpful.
The lumix gx7 seems like a really solid choice but I’ve never used a lumix camera before so IDK how they stack up against some of those olympus ones. I’d be buying from mpb, upp, or keh so it had some kind of warranty at least (avoiding ebay et al)… but that does bump the initial price up just a little bit.
Also, my lenses are primarily olympus lenses… which should work but I know sometimes there are quirks with putting them on lumix and vice versa. 🤷
Anyway… if anyone has suggestions or insights it would be much appreciated. 😊
Thanks.
I have the og e-m10, later bought a used gx80 and a pen e-p1, both for real cheap. While the gx80 is probably now my “best” camera, it is currently collecting dust mostly, and i just kept using the e-m10.
And the e-p1, while certainly not up to date, i just love that one as a a walk around camera. Feels a lot smaller slimmer than the gx80 too, and i was already thinking if i should buy a newer of those pen style cameras. Maybe an e-p3 😆. Bought both those cameras from an ebay type platform.
I did not give the gx80 its fair chance yet (as in use it a lot for a while), but i would recommend the pen style oly’s, they’re fun, just miss the viewfinder, which the gx80 has. But somehow it does not feel as fun to me.
Yeah. The tilting back lcd is a must for me, especially if there is no EVF. So I’ve been looking at the e-pl6 because I can get it fairly cheap with a warranty from a reseller. It doesn’t have all the features but it does look promising. I just keep looking at the ones for 100 more and they have some newer sensors and screens etc. Always go round and round on this stuff heh.
With the e-m10 and the gx80 having similar feature sets… what is making you stick with the e-m10 more?
Sure, I didn’t want to talk you into buying an e-p1 or something, just wanted to let you know how i felt about the gx80 compared to the oly ones. In theory the gx80 should be basically perfect for me, but somehow it just doesn’t feel right. Got it for 180€ incl. kit lense, flawless condition.
