The whole point of these tariffs is supposedly to spur a massive reinvestment in American manufacturing. How the hell is any business or bank supposed to do any investing in an environment where they don’t know from one day to the next how much anything will cost?
Well, it’s not that, for one. Neither in intent nor practice.
That’s what they keep saying their intent is, and IMO it’s logical to assume that at least some people believe it. It’s safe to assume that Trump believes it, because it’s something he’s been saying consistently since the 1980s.
Maybe some other people in his administration are huffing hardcore Moldbugian ideology like paint thinner, but those ideas don’t make any sense on their face either. There’s probably people who believe different things in the administration.
