• it literally takes 5 minutes for them to restock the free samples. whatever lesson your daughter learns from shopping with impatient dad is going to be subordinate to what she learns from a dad who feeds his kid “lunch” at costco on free samples and $1.50 hotdogs+soda.

    which, if I had kids, I would absolutely do too, but I have no illusions my kids would not realize what a shameless tightwad I am. and I wouldn’t get all shitty about others doing it too.

      Sample day (with possible supplemental hot dog) lunch was a key component of our budget when we were in real dire financial straits a few years ago. Scam our way in the door with a gift card, an old membership card, or a “trip to the pharmacy” then go to town on the samples. We’d always get at least one or two hot dogs after, so the kids could load up on free refill fountain drinks. Not bad for $2-3.

      Of course now they have their fucking tightwad card scanners at the entrance and in the food court, so the hot dogs and drinks are off limits. Fascists.
