Poland and Soviet Russia were both climbing out from the ashes of monarch rule. They quickly scrambled to reclaim borders and expand those borders. Poland was technically the first to expand and move into Russian territory by capturing Vilnius and then Kyiv. This was not a “big bad Russians were conquering poor Poland” situation.

More than that the Russian Civil War wasn’t even over and Poland was formed by the Central Powers from the crumbling Russian Empire of which Poland had been apart of since the 1870s.

1918-1922 was a period where four empires, German, Austria-Hungary, Russian, and Ottoman all disintegrated. Many within the ashes were left to the whims of the British and the French’s geopolitical goals.
