GM is fucking stupid for not supporting the major platforms that people choose to use. The phone is probably the most important piece of tech in most people’s lives.

Apple CarPlay / Android Auto interfaces with your phone, it’s not a thing that is standalone. GM got rid of it when they realized they can make more peanut butter money by enforcing nav subscriptions and integrated car systems into the head unit so you can’t go aftermarket.

Unpopular opinion, but good. I don’t want Apple or Google embedded in my car. Just give me an aux cord / Bluetooth, and I’ll be on my way. Better yet, bring back the DIN/Double-DIN standard so I actually have options.

That and HDMI/video over USB-C. Most smartphones probably support that now. Now your in-car display can look the same as your phone in landscape mode instead of some afterthought UI with minimal functionality.

I use navigation a lot even on familiar regular commutes because of chaotic traffic in my city. Having it displayed on a bigger screen than my phone is definitely better and safer. Apple or Google isn’t embedded into the car, the infotainment system just mirrors your phone. Also, since my phone and its apps already have my data, I might as well just have it mirrored instead of also sharing my data with yet another entity (car manufacturer proprietary apps). And yes, I’m not naive and I know there’s already a bunch of tracking embedded into the car itself. Having brand-agnostic tech that works on any vehicle is the better option.

Lol. The EVs by GM do have Google embedded… The whole system runs on Android. When you buy the care you get 8 free years of Google maps. It’s even more embedded with no optionality for carplay, which is why these kits were developed. So in reality they are going further from what you want not closer.

Yep; unpopular. I can tell you’ve had a crappy android auto / CarPlay adapter because that crap is GOLD.
