Oxford and Yale both seem to attribute it to philosopher Blaise Pascal… but it was in French when he wrote it. Which to me actually makes it more convincing, because that would explain why nobody is sure who said it first - do you count the French version, or the first time it was translated, or the first time someone phrased it their own way in English?
