I watched Irrational Man starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, because I wanted to see something different.
I was tired of watching bad movies, so I thought, āLetās go for a simple rom-com with some decent actors.ā I had no idea what this movie was aboutāPrime Video just recommended it.
Well, itās awful. Itās terrible in ways that felt particularly off. Itās clear this was written by a guy who canāt write women. All they do is obsess over men, especially the main guy, Abe Lucas, whoās a complete jerk with zero redeeming qualities.
Abe, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is supposed to be some troubled bad boy, but heās just a drunk slob who does the bare minimum. And honestly, I donāt get why all the women on campus are into him. Heās not in shape, and the movie even says heās not impressive.
The plot? Itās meant to appeal to white, middle-class liberals. Abeās character is like a cheap version of Charles Bukowski meets Rodion Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment. Itās so heavy-handed, they even have him reading Dostoevsky.
But it doesnāt work. Raskolnikov was an idealist, while Abeās just jaded and believes in nothing. So when he commits his crime, thereās no emotional weight. He doesnāt even seem to care except that he thinks itās a game.
As for the love story? Thereās no real one. The women just want to sleep with Abe because they think heās some kind of god. I donāt get itāheās just a professor with no original thoughts, but everyoneās obsessed with him.
Sure, Joaquin Phoenix is good-looking, but thatās not the point. The movie isnāt about him being hot. Itās about a narcissistic failure who commits a crime, and it just doesnāt work.
Emma Stoneās character is equally annoying. She talks about Abe like heās some mythical figure, which no real woman would ever do. Itās just not believable.
And the dialogue? Everyone sounds like theyāre trying way too hard to sound smart. Itās like they just threw in big words to make the characters seem intellectual.
And then I found out Woody Allen wrote and directed it. Of course he did. Abe Lucas is just Woody Allen imagining himself as a tortured genius.
Iām done with Woody Allenās self-mythologizing. I was done years ago, and if I knew he was the mind behind this film, I probably wouldnāt have watched it. Irrational Man is a mess, and I couldnāt stand it.
Woody Allen is still alive? Joaquin Pheonix is attractive?
Yes? Heās a leading actor.
I mean, I understand that taste is subjective, but you donāt get to be the lead actor in a movie if you are ugly. Even the weird looking actors and actresses that people argue about are striking to look at compared to a lot of normal people.
