F-Droid has been giving me some issues for a few days (that I’ve noticed). It crashes immediately upon opening. Sometimes I will see it open for less than one second before it crashes, but usually it just goes right to a crash submittal screen. I want to reinstall it, but am unsure how to handle all my apps. Will it just pick them back up? I don’t really know how to troubleshoot this, I am open to alternative paths!
Go into Android app settings, find F-droid, and clear all data + cache. That will reset the F-droid config.
If it’s a config error, clearing app data should get it to start again, and it’ll still see the apps you have installed.
If that does NOT fix the problem, the problem is probably the app itself, and not the configuration. Manually download and install a previous version of F-droid, and turn off auto update.
Thanks! That has gotten the ball rolling. Perhaps config related. This must have been going on for a while, I have many app updates pending now… This particular device is old, maybe part of the issue.
There is also the F-Droid Basic app which is totally sufficient for the “normal” user. They can be installed parallelly.
I wouldn’t call myself advanced, but I am installing an alternative OS on a replacement device, so I felt motivated to ask for direction. This is exactly what I would like to know I have as an option, thanks!
Good luck with keeping your (I assume probably older) phone up to date with a current Android.
Thanks. It’s a pixel 3a, but I recently bought a 7a with which I am working on a GrapheneOS install. I’m not waiting until my current device dies like I did five years ago.
I believe it would pick all of them back up. I use a different f-droid client (droidify) and can see all my apps in both droidify and f-droid
I should have added that, yes, it did pick them back up,. It even cleaned up the repositories I had added (I am guessing stock F-Droid carries those now?).
Did you get your problem solved?
I did! Is there an action I need to take to mark this as solved?
Yaaay!
And no idea, I just wanted to say congrats on getting it figured out if you did!
I agree with the other commenter though about it being good to share what your fix was in case someone stumbles across this :)
Can’t speak to the community rule, but it’s mandatory Internet etiquette to explain how you fixed it.
😬 I just commented in another thread about not knowing manners (in a barn)… I’m on it!
I followed the advice given by @actionjbone@sh.itjust.works and cleared the cache and app data, and F-Droid started appropriately, picked up all my apps, and updated them all. Everything works fine now. I dont know the initial cause, but I have a Pixel 3a with a somewhat stock OS (so, outdated), it can be flakey. Thanks for the help!
Glad to hear it worked!
There are SO many different things that can cause a tiny bit of corruption. And over time that corruption can spread until things start to break. Fortunately, Android apps are self-contained enough that clearing the data like that usually fixes it.
Try turning Bluetooth off.
It’s always off unless I turn it on. Interesting that this could be a problem!
The swap feature is just straight up busted for some reason. Maybe try turning Bluetooth ON???
