So, I’ve been trying to set this up with a plan to self host without public access. Just to share family pictures.
But I’m cutting a lot of corners to make it work for myself and my family only, since that’s my goal.
I think it has a container crutch. If it can install on a system and update like all my other stuff (automatically) then I’m in. I don’t have time to pop containers 6000km away with minimal tech support when they blow up.
What you wanna do is install docker engine, which installs docker locally on your server instead if someone else’s cloud. Following this you can spin it up using a self hosted container.
If you want it to be accessible outside your home network you can set up pivpn and wireguard to access it from anywhere, just VPN into the home network and connect to immich through there.
I rolled out immich in about an hour today using this, a few days ago I did jellyfin as well. Thinking about doing xmpp and email next
Immich was alright once I had manually set every account to be “Partners” with every other account. I plan to set it up again once I get hardware for the server so I can easily backup images/video from my phone (while at home anyway).
Never used Instagram. Could selfhosting Pixelfed be useful for sharing pictures between family members?

There’s no privacy.
It’s posting your images to the world by default?
Yes, whatever you put up there is for public consumption. It’s closer to Twitter than Facebook.
While I have not used this feature specifically - immich is great for self hosting photos

It’ll be much easier to install immich than pixelfed
I thought the same thing til just earlier today!

possibly, but that specific use-case has been solved with dedicated image hosting tools that allow sharable links https://photoview.github.io/
this is more decentralized social networks
This looks great. I have been using Nextcloud and FileBrowser for that.
